8/8: Peru plane shot down as drug runners, pullled out of water

Since yesterday was a plane wreck, here's another way you can die from general aviation: being shot down over Peru by the Peruvian Air Force and CIA contractors while performing missionary services.

A few days ago when they recovered the plane, the nightly news had some audio of the CIA guys, who seriously suspected that something was amiss about this. One of them says something like, "This could be a huge mistake." But they didn't speak the language and couldn't tell the Peruvians to hold tight.

The result, as you see, a pretty good shot and a few more innocent lives gone. What's remarkable about this one is, again, the survivors. Two people died instantly but three survived as the plane crashed into the Amazon.

They are CIA "contractors", working with the Peruvian authorities in a highly sensitive and extremely intense situation, and they DON'T SPEAK SPANISH???

I mean... Spanish is practically america's 2nd official language... surely to god the CIA could have found SOMEONE in the agency who at least took it in high school or something?

that's pretty brutal that a plane full of missionaries was shot down because the 2 teams working together on the operation could not communicate properly..

Well, wait a minute! Let's not just pick on GA. Don't forget that you can die in an airliner by being suspected of being a spy plane... Don't forget KAL flight 007 that got shot down.

(I always wondered why no one ever pointed out the interesting correlation -- the flight suspected of being a spy plane was "007")

What exactly do you mean by "missionary services" ?

I don't think the CIA would go to Peru without specific 'personal' interest, much less to be involved in a plane interception.

Missionary as in spreading religious word. I think they were Baptists.

Aw what the hell. This IS the IotD section.
