Election Day

I'm running for the Victor Valley College Board of Trustees, and the Victor Valley Water District. I have a fairly good chance of winning the water district, but the college board is being closely watched. I haven't spent a dime on either of these campaigns but I've been the paper several times. The most recent was this last Sunday.

The article is HERE

The Newspaper article has a nice photo of me in a suit and a blown up quotation of mine referring to bringing new blood onto the board.

Wish me luck. I've never been in an election before and I'm pretty excited about it.

I don't know what it is, but I feel oddly compelled to wish him luck.

Good luck, dude.

The fact that he is 3000 miles away and is running for relatively insignificant offices helps ... but one does have to start somewhere.

Good luck, radar.

Hey, the Radar's link didn't have the pic he mentioned. Ah well...
Good luck, dude. Humble word of advice though, don't call any of the board members "house niggers." ;)

Water is very important in a desert community, and you're right about starting somewhere. The Republicans and Democrats have groomed candidates in "relatively insignificant offices" for over a century.

Thank you sir.

They only put the pic in the printed newspaper. Sorry bro.

Thanks for the luck, and hopefully I won't have to call them that. Hopefully they'll act right. ;)

OMG! Radar=Establishment. Next they'll be telling me there's no Santa Claus.

As for the rest of you, I hope you're all voting ... I'm stuck here at the paper until midnight running data. Don't even get to write a story. :(

But that's okay because I hate politics.

Sigh ... at least they fed us tonight. Pizza and wings - just like working at the college paper!

Um. No.

xoxoxoBruce 11-04-2003 06:44 PM

I noticed a ton of food at my poll today. There was 3 polling stations set up for the 3 precincts and each had a pile of food on their tables. They even had a big table set up outside for the leaflet mongers. Wonder who paid for all that? Me?:)

Undertoad 11-04-2003 07:25 PM

I voted, no food, the usual gauntlet.

The food may be the gift of the candidate to the poll workers, if the candidate is particularly thoughtful.

elSicomoro 11-04-2003 09:09 PM

They had homemade pumpkin pie up at my polling place...of course, it wasn't for the voters.

I thought the "propagandists" (the folks that give you campaign material as you go in) weren't supposed to actually be inside the polling place. But there were three of them right inside the door...and they were rather pushy.

There were more issues on the ballot here in the city than I thought: Mayor, City Council, all the judges, 7 city charter changes, and 2 PA Constitution questions.

Street is handily beating Sam Katz in the mayor's race. Another fine example of emotion giving logic a beat down. *sigh*

Center City was abuzz with activity today--City Hall is just down the street from us as is Katz's headquarters. Crazy shit--people walking around, hooting and hollering all day.

At least there's still next year to look forward to...

It's still early out in CA, but here's San Bernardino County's election results site.

WHAT!?!? They weren't on my ballot?

Radar 11-05-2003 08:53 AM

Oh well, I didn't win, but I did pretty good considering the other guys spent literally tens of thousands of dollars and I didn't spend a dime. I got 4.87% in a race where the winner only had 17.29% and spent no less than $30k and I got 15.49% in a race where the winner had 29.43% of the votes. I was only 289 votes away from winning a spot.

I learned a bit from this election and confirmed something I already know. It takes money to win elections. Hopefully I'll have enough name recognition that I can do fund raising the next time.

elSicomoro 11-05-2003 06:58 PM

What the hell is wrong with you, Bruce?

BALLOT QUESTION #1
AMENDING THE RIGHT OF PERSONS ACCUSED OF A CRIME TO MEET THE WITNESSES AGAINST THEM FACE TO FACE
Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to provide that a person accused of a crime has the right to be "confronted with the witnesses against him," instead of the right to "meet the witnesses face to face"?

BALLOT QUESTION #2
AMENDING THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO ENACT LAWS REGARDING THE WAY THAT CHILDREN MAY TESTIFY IN CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS
Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to provide that the General Assembly may enact laws regarding the manner by which children may testify in criminal proceedings, including the use of videotaped depositions or testimony by closed-circuit television?

(Source: The Committee of Seventy)

Both passed...I voted no for question 1 and yes for question 2.

Radar, imagine if you had spent a little dough though...even just for some flyers...you could very well have won that water board seat.
