Work...had enough...must quit

When is it time to call it quits and find another job?

I've worked for my employer for the last three years (nearly four) and have done an excellent job (or so the recent ~8% raise and praise indicates).

I work in I.S. I'm very good at what I do. I am very professional and co-workers seem to like me.

I've been pigeon-holed into my position. There is no upper mobility. I want out of I.S. and can be of better use elsewhere. I'm an Engineer with a fair amount of automation and controls experience and can do a lot of good in a plant that relies heavily on controls and automation. Upper Management is well aware of it. I am frustrated.

So what now?
Quit? (and make the wife work?)
Have a job waiting and rattle some cages?
Just keep working?

Change is inevitable. At least if you initiate change now, you will be in control. With your present mindeset it seems like the longer you wait, the less happy you will be,and eventually the move toward change will be one of desperation.

Browse the online job boards.

Read the want ads (not all good IT jobs are online - trust me).

Send out some resumés.

See what happens.

My advice is, patience, and send out resumes. Don't do something rash. You're in a stronger position as long as you actually have a job.

To echo SteveDallas ... it is much easier to find a job if you have a job.

For whatever reason, the unemployed lately have a tendency to remain that way. (Even/especially if they don't want to).

An alternative would be to find something innovative you could do in your present position that would make it a new and fresh experience.

You may just be bored of the routine rather than not actually liking the job itself (unless your job is The Pit of Eternal Suffering).
