Monitor hunting
Last night, my monitor died. Or rather, the monitor that UT was nice enough to let me use died. I have my old 13" I can use for the time being, but it's apparently not compatible with XP...everything looks fuzzy, and I did a good amount of troubleshooting.
Anyhoo, I'm in the market for a used monitor or a place that sells them cheap in the Philadelphia area...a 17-21" job. Nothing fancy. Any help would be appreciated. |
go to ebay...do a search for CACRC (in the descriptions). You can find several 15 to 17 inch used monitors going for just above $10. The shipping charges are a little high but when you add the two together, the deal is usually still reasonable.... so look over the shipping charges before you bid.
I've bought lots of machines and monitors from these guys - They're local to me so I don't pay shipping. |
SA, are their computers pretty good stuff? I can't believe some of the prices they have!
|
Just put a bid on a KDS 17"...$38 for shipping plus whatever the monitor comes out to be (currently $11). I'll see how high the auction goes, but even for a little more, that's a pretty good deal.

Sic, I've bought 5 machines from them ( 266 to 350 Dells and 1 15 Inch monitor ) and have not had a problem. Of course, your milage may vary. The CACRC is the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council, a volunteer organization that accepts used computers (and other things) and refurbishes them for use in schools (free of charge). (They lend the computers to schools indefinately) They get rid of some of the stuff on ebay to generate money to run some of their operation and buy those things that people don't donate. All in all, I've had good experience with them. Good Luck. (P.S....with the CACRC, I tend to bid on items people have ignored - so's not to bid up. The last machine I got (for my son) was a Dell 233 @ $20. His monitor cost me $25. I had a friend get a 17 inch monitor for $10.) |
22 minutes left...still at a reasonable price...if it goes any higher though, I'll pass.
I just might have to pick up a "new" computer from these guys...and it's for a good cause...thanks for the tip, SA! |
So Syc, -- didja get it???

Yeah, but I overpaid for it. It serves me right though...I haven't used eBay in 5 years, and I didn't check prices on new monitors.
(Why the fuck did I not do that? WTF?!) Total cost was $79, which as a whole is alright. But I could have bought a brand new one for $100 (after $20 rebate) with free shipping. You live, you learn. Fortunately, it is not too costly of an error. |
What size?
|
17"

The new used monitor arrived this afternoon...works like a champ. Thanks for the hookup, SA.

Not a problem...sorry to hear you overpaid...
good luck |
An e-mail I sent to the CACRC this afternoon...
Good afternoon, My monitor arrived on Friday February 6; however, the box arrived damaged, and did not include a power cord as stated in the auction listing. In addition, the monitor is resizing the screen horizontally without my changing it. I have read your policies, and if possible, I would like to return the monitor for refund. Please contact me regarding further instructions on returning this item to you. Thank you, Terry Blastenbrei (e-mail) (phone #) Shit happens. *shrugs* |

Things turn for the worse..... |
Unfortunately, yeah.
I started noticing problems shortly after I made the post about it working fine. First, there were screen flickers...then I noticed it was horizontally resizing without me doing anything. The screen flickers have stopped, but the resizing issue continues. Like I said, shit happens. I knew what I was getting when I bought it. I'm just glad it has a warranty. Time to look for another one...I think I'll go new this time around... |
