It appears that a prolific porn star (Darren James) has become HIV + and possibly infected as many as 16 partners and 35 "legacy" partners.

The industry has "quarrantined" all persons who may have been exposed to the virus for 60 days until their blood tests come back. Anyone found "working" will be blacklisted and fired. I see that the industry also tests all "models" every three weeks. In my day it was every thirty days. They must have gotten more strict with that policy.

I feel sorry for them. Really, I do. I wouldn't wish HIV on anyone. Certain behavior is risky. You increase your risk by being a porn star. So there's no real surprise here.

Actually, the models and their handlers (agents, you sicko!) take great pains to test frequently for all STDs. Not just HIV but the clap and everything else. Even crabs are assidously avoided and no one will work with someone who is not tested clean very recently. And they tend to stay in their own sandboxes. Most porn stars do not take outside lovers unless they, too, are tested clean. The models are very conscious of their vulnerability.

But the severity of this outbreak is what makes it news...the others have been nearly unreported except by industry rags such as AVN...which I've been a member of since the late eighties. That and the titillation factor.

I'm just saying that your chances of contracting a disease as a porn star isn't much greater on average than as a non-porn-star average Joe.

This is apparently the first outbreak in four years. Such a good track record can lead to complacency, and overreliance on the system.

I'm assuming you either worked in or work in the industry? Is it as bad as they say?

I worked in the industry, as a stringer for AVN magazine. I also acted (in a non-sex role) in several films.

I know several of the old-time actresses (back when you hadda ACT as well as be sexy) and they are all great people.

As far as I know, the industry has gotten bigger since then, and the pool of models has gotten a lot bigger but the people in general are still very close and help each other when in need.

There is a fund being set up to help the models who live paycheck to paycheck and the companies are tossing around the idea of paying the talent and crew for movies still on paper but not shot due to the moratorium. They are counting on them to return to work when the moratorium is lifted.

I say it's not a bad thing to work in the adult industry, although it does tend to make one cliquish. Most performers only date within their industry and when they don't, their partners (if they stay long enough) tend to come in in one way or another. Either as an agent, advisor, spouse or co-star. All of the above have happened to people I know personally.

One name I will drop is Sharon Mitchell, the director of AIM. She and I have met several times in the eighties and she's a remarkably intelligent woman. I used to have a snapshot of us at an appearance of hers here in Philadelphia which happened to occur on my birthday. I'll post it if I can find it. The big smile on her face is not from sitting on my lap, but because of the joke I just told her when the camera clicked.

I don't envy for one minute, any porn star. Having to perform on camera, on demand, and hold yourself in weird positions, just so's the cameras can get the full anatomical view must surely take all the pleasure out of it.

1. You would be amazed at what happens on some nude beaches .. not actually ON the beach .. in the dunes behind the beach .. although I have watched couples fuck their brains out, in broad daylight in the middle of a crowded beach, without a care.

2. I am not at the beach at present, and have not just returned from same .. because its rather cool, out, where I am at present, in the Southern Hemisphere .. definitely not beach weather.
