Getting rid of old Intel Hardware
 

Hello all,

Over the next 2 months, we're going to be dumping a bunch of older Intel hardware (1999 era stuff). This is Philly area.

Anyone have any use for this?

Seriously. Unless you want to run Linux on this stuff, isn't worth it.

not true.. I admit that many flavours of Linux will run better then many flavours of Windows on that HW
but I have found homes for many PI machines, anything over PI 200MMX is enough for a vast number of people, who just occasionally want to use Word, surf the net on dial up, play some moderate games etc.

For instance a Pentium I or II is perfect for a kid to have as a computer of their own.

Linux would be prefereable but most people don't want the hastle of having to learn how to use it and they always want to install their dumb windows proggies anyhow..

While I agree that many older Windows variants will work, most people whom I deal with like the ability to go to the store and pick up software. Isn't happening with a PII these days!

unless you are talking games (you prob are) few things won't run on a PII with a decent amount of memory.
Hell if it is a PII 300 or later run w2k on it and you are home

BTW even games with a good enough graphics card can sometimes suprise on what seems like old hardware.

My daughter's machine is a PI 200 with 128MB SIMM memory a decent HHD, win98SE and a 16MB voodoo II PCI graphic card. I threw it together for nothing and it can run quite a few graphic intensive games even when the requirements say PII 300 or greater.

Just don't bin the machines, if I was on your side of the Atlantic I'd be knocking on your door to pick them up

I'm not binning them :)

I am not trashing them, only the ones I've ripped parts out of to cannibalize for the others.

I've given at least 15 away so far. Amazing what downsizing can do :).

I'm still a viable computer HW charity!

My old linux machine bit the dust and I can use some parts to breathe life back into it. A monitor larger than 13" would be nice too. And a complete keyboard...and more RAM and and and...
