Awesome firepower

I'm not normally an admirer of weaponry, but I was sent a collection of images of big guns going off. I thought NBN would appreciate them. I'll post a few of them now.

My favorite:
The nine 16-inch guns comprise Battleship NORTH CAROLINA’s "Main Battery," her most destructive weapon. The guns are housed in three six-level turrets, which extend from the exterior decks down to just above the Ship’s bottom. The primary targets for these guns were enemy ships and shore bombardments. Effective range at 45 degrees armor piercing projectiles 21 miles high capacity projectiles 23 miles Rate of fire 30 seconds per round Weight of armor piercing projectile 2700 pounds (shells used to penetrate another ship’s armor or reinforced fortifications on shore) Weight of high capacity projectile 1900 pounds (shells used primarily for bombardment of islands and other land targets) Weight of powder charge 540 pounds: six 90-pound bags Gun crew per turret 3 officers, 177 enlisted Edit: added info |
Wow! I wonder how fish died when those guns went off? :shotgun:

The guns have to be ripple fired as well. Even ripple firing the guns pushes the ship 150 feet sideways. |
Damn, I just got an erection.
The killing part ain't cool, but the stuff they use to do it is incredible. |
Pic 1 , a 5-6 inch deck gun
Pic 2 , a fuel air explosive , the big ones are suposedly the largest non-nuke explosion there is , that wall in front of the fire ball lookes like those cargo modules that 18 wheelers haul about , they are about to be crumpled like tin foil Pic 3 , that looks european to me , moblie field artillery Pic 4 , is that a US Paladin ????? Oh and the North Cacalacki FUCKING ROCKS !!!!!!! From what i was told if the top of a mountin range is going to interfear with a shot , they can and will take a "little of the top " to make the shot . |
Awesomely cool.
I want one. Of each. Particularly #2, the air burst. |
that's some awsome photography too. Pic4 a crusader test?
I wonder if they were in a hurry they could fire the rear guns backards - NO2 for a battleship ;) |

Mother of All Bombs http://www.newscientist.com/data/ima...99993495F1.JPG First test for US monster bomb 14:21 12 March 03 NewScientist.com news service In a show of military might seemingly aimed at intimidating Iraq's armed forces, the US has tested one of the most powerful non-nuclear weapons ever developed. The bomb detonated on Tuesday at a test site at Eglin Air Force Base in northwest Florida, generating a shock wave felt several kilometres away. Officials said the bomb could be used in Iraq. The new weapon is named the Massive Ordnance Air Burst (MOAB), but has also been dubbed the "Mother of All Bombs". The 9.7-tonne device contains only conventional explosives, but creates a mushroom cloud and a shockwave similar to that of a small nuclear explosion. It has blast range of several hundred metres. |
