So, I'm flipping through this morning's Metro on the subway, and a massive color picture of marijuana in baggies catches my eye (not that I've ever seen marijuana before ... right ...).

Medical marijuana is being pushed in NY legislature right now. They're working on getting some provisions through the political meat grinder, but this was my favorite part:

"Under the bill, doctors must determine that other treatments failed to remedy a patient's problem.
With a doctor's certification, the patient ... would go to any pharmacy, or state or county health department ... and get a 30-day supply - eight ounces at most, the cut-off for felony possession."

EIGHT OUNCES. For ONE MONTH. Are you fucking kidding me?? Think of the black market potential!!!

Not..that I..know what an ounce would cost. Ok who am I kidding? The dude I used to get my weed from would be able to get an "O" for about 120 dollars, and he'd make that shit last for a good while (especially if his supply was dry).

Black market potential? I know that's right. And imagine the amount of people who would try to get their doctor to certify the use of MM:

"Yo doc. That pain medication ain't workin'. Hook me up wid some of dat medical 'ish!" :p

There are plenty of docs that are over-writing script for percoset, vicoden, and oxycontin ... heck, all you have to look at to know who that might be is check on the primary care physician of the druggies ... about 3/4 of our local junkies all go to the same doc, who is well known for being the local Dr Feelgood.

No, I won't tell you who that is. I don't need the additional business ...

If there's going to be a black market for prescription drugs (and there is), weed is probably better than many of the current alternatives.

I had a friend who, after college got some sort of research job where they gave joints to people and did tests on them as they got stoned. It was a long time ago, and unfortunatle I don't remember the details of her stories. But I do remember she said it was a very surreal job.

Volunteers would come into her lab. She would open a sealed package containing a joint with a precise amount of grade A government reefer. The volunteers would light up and start toking. They almost always remarked on how good the quality of the pot was. They would usually get really paranoid, since they were being watched very closely by her and also I imagine getting stoned in sterile environment with all sorts of tests being done on them didn't help either.

I guess my whole point is that if the government gets involved in this and starts regulating the supply, the quality may improve. Of course, with the current administration, the inverse may be true.

I kinda recall one of the big newsmagazine shows doing a report on medical marijuana. The recipients were complaining about the lack of quality in the government supplied weed ... it was old, dry, and didn't do much to get them high, IIRC.

I think they mean 8 grams (about 1/3 oz). No way they mean eight ounces.

Think you're right. Last year Canada contracted a company to produce tons of IIRC 10% or so THC, pot. The crop turned out to be around 16%, so they destroyed it and the company lost the contract for noncompliance.:(

Really, I don't see what the big deal is. I'm not all that much in the know, but as far as I can tell; there's already a thriving blackmarket in prescription drugs. What's one more added to the general mix? Even if medical marijuana became legal, I bet there would still be a greater demand for oxycoden and the other morphine derivatives, for example. Its a lot easier to find weed, than it is good, pure opiates, at least in my extremely limited experience of the matter.

My view is if it's not written in the US Constitution, the states have a right to make their own laws.

The courts have pretty much upheld a doctors right to recommend marijuana, so they appear to be going after legal distribution instead.

About 6 months ago, forever in online news, I read an article in one of the lefty feeds that said the the gov't weed was so bad that people were giving it back.

Yeah, that story came from Canada when the first few batches of medical pot were sold some time ago. Look it up on Netscape/CNN's Odd News section.

My friend was recently in California, where apparently they've developed pot pills, dissolvable THC-based capsules. His friend said they're marvelous. My friend tried to get one, but wasn't able to.

I thought felony possesion was one ounce (28.8 grams). Or that might be the level for possession with intent to distribute. Who knows.

Even if it's not legal, I still manage to get my grubby hands on the stuff pretty easily anyway. :)

Most of the time it will be a state crime and penalties vary from state to state.

I think every state has a different set of laws, but federal laws state 28.8 grams is felony possession, if I remember correctly.

With cocaine and possibly heroin, it's the amount, not the purity, that constitutes the crime.

1 ounce of 0.99% pure cocaine is less of an crime than 1 pound of powdered sugar with 0.01% cocaine.
