XP SP2

Has anyone here downloaded Service Pack 2 for XP yet? If so, did you encounter any problems with your system once you installed it?

I downloaded it twice tonight--once it installed, my system wouldn't fully reboot. I then tried to reboot again--the system would load up, but nothing worked...couldn't pull up any programs or folders. I couldn't figure out what the fuck was going so I did a system restore.

Anyone?

I downloaded it on both my desktop and laptop with no major problems. There were a few new icons in the control panel and had a few security related pop ups after booting up after the download. Other than that everything is running fine on both machines. I did follow their suggestions and backed up my system before installing SP2 though, just in case.

I did it. Took a long time, which I'm not used to with a fast connection.
When I opened Outlook Express, they had installed a new version. Everything was gone, all emails, folders and address book.
System restore saved the day, then I went to the download site and read the fine print. Nope, they don't warn you, bastards.
Someone told me the files for OE could be searched for and backed up, but I couldn't find them.

btw- someone told me their daughter tried to do it to her laptop and got the blue screen of death. Ended up with a complete reinstall. Anecdotal, but who knows. :(

I didn't have any problems. I did notice the new security cosole. It even managed to behave with my McAfee Internet security, which can be a jealous beast when it comes to other security software, even Windows itself.

I wonder if the issues I'm having are due to the Windows Firewall. I'll try and install it again.

Roosta 10-03-2004 02:15 PM

Our IT fella loaded it up to try it out on his laptop before loading it everywhere else in the office. He said it caused a few programs to stop running properly. After a while, he uninstalled it and is going to wait a month or two until it gets tweaked..

Syc, I do remember that my Norton firewall had issues with the new Windows firewall when I installed SP2. Basically it said I could have one or the other running, it prefered I turn off the Windows firewall, which I did. I couldn't have both like I had before the install.

These are clips from an Email I got just yesterday from an Email circle I'm a member of. It seems several members of this group have had trouble with it too and this is what some of them found out.

There are issues with SP2 - not only do you need to update your spyware and security/virus programs, but any other program you may not have current updates on. If you do not take the time to go thru your different programs to make sure they are current - it could cost you a lot of down time later on. And if you have an hp computer, there are several hp updates you must do prior to SP2 - go to hp.com - updates/downloads.

I have downloaded the SP2, after going thru this procedure with my hp computer and so are so good. Those who have not had any problems, more han likely had all their updates in.

I installed the service pack on my laptop (HP) with no problems. However the
IT guys said it was important to upgrade any security software you might
have first--there was an upgrade available for my security program and
apparently if you upgraded XP first it would cause problems... (My security
program is called F-Secure)

Yes, I'm running it

I'm running it on two machines here, and at two customers' sites for client workstations.

The customers use Symantec AntiVirus (both NAV and SAV Corporate), and a variety of applications including Office, Internet Explorer, and one big SQL Server 2000-based application. They also use Quickbooks 2004, Adobe applications, and such.

So far, my experience has been that if you've had massive amounts of spyware, you're probably not going to like the transition too well.

If your hardware vendor is Compaq/HP, you'll also want to be careful, as their customized installs on their Pavilions and Presarios don't take to service packs too well. Yes, my customers have somewhat customized images, and if they're OEM images, are usually the Dell Optiplex images (which are generally very stable).

Otherwise, the only issues I've seen have been with:

1. Customers attempting to use Microsoft Exchange 5.5's Outlook Web Access, because the pop up blocker is enabled by default. This breaks the Reply function, and Firefox has the same behavior :).

2. Customers attempting to install ActiveX controls in IE, because it makes you confirm the add-in step.

3. You can still get spyware from the less-scrupulous shareware authors who enclose spyware with their applications (like the P2P vendors).

4. One enterprise fax application does not work.

Otherwise, everything else works, and the firewall now comes up before the network cards are initialized. That, and the machines haven't had driver issues. People can still connect to file shares and to SQL Server.

Wireless works 100% better. I highly recommend SP2 to wireless users if only for the new, actually usable, control panel.

It still beats Windows NT 4.0 Service Packs 4 and 6. At least this time they didn't mess up the password store or file system :).

If you're a home user, and you're not using Outlook Express, it's worth it.

Blast!! There's always a catch somewhere!

OnyxCougar 10-04-2004 01:32 PM

I'm running it, use Outlook 2004 (part of the Office 2004 suite) and had no problems. I have McAfee Anti Vi and it came up and asked if I wanted to use Windows settings or McAfee settings, I chose McAfee, and I've had NO problems.

The only annoyance was the occasional "block or unblock" dialog boxes. Once all the programs had been run and I unblocked them, I haven't had a bit of trouble.

Installed flawlessly. No problems encountered so far.

I'll let you know if anything wonky happens.

Of course, I refuse to use Outlook and use Explorer for browsing only rarely.

Service Pack 2 is ruining my life... I am unable to print from an online database that I use for lawschool because of the service pack's pop up blocker. It has been a real headache. I'm sure I could fix it, but I'm lazy.
