I miss the Arms Locker

I suddenly find myself in the market for a home-defense shotgun, for reasons that shall not be discussed here. I'm thinking either the Remington 870 18" bbl magnum chamber, or the Mossberg 500 18" bbl magnum chamber cylinder choke with the Parkerized finish.

I'm mostly interested in the short barrel length (legally that is), ability to chamber and fire magnum shells, preferably with a synthetic stock and grip. Price is also a consideration, although a secondary one. MY safety is worth an extra $100.

Sometimes life just throws you a curve...and beans you on purpose. When will the ump let me take my base?

Assuming you're not otherwise legally restricted from doing so, just go to a gun show and see what's walking around with a sign hanging off it. Let the gods decide for you. You'll probably end up saving more than $100 that way. It's not like you're looking for a trap gun.

Where?

This is what I have. It's 8+1 with 4 riding inside the stock, so 13 rounds onboard without anything in your way. The action is smooth and it takes 3" shells.

#50668 590® 12 gauge Pump Action w/ Speed-Feed® synthetic stock, Ghost Ring Sights, 9-shot capacity, 20" cylinder bore barrel, parkerized finish. MSRP $586

Edit: it has an M16 bayonet lug as well.

Now that makes an excellent home defense weapon ...

Now that halloween is over I may go see what they want for a truckload of pumpkins around town and head out to the country to give the Mossberg a good workout.

I want to see what a 3" magnum fin-stabilized hollow-point slug will do... :shotgun:

Look into some cheap meat too. I've seen video.

the way mossbergs rattle always bothered me , but damn if they won't keep shooting any way .
Remington , mossberg , tomato tamoto , look at both , feel both , see what fits you best and feel the best , THEN look at prices , look at Ithaca as well , verrrrrry smoth action ( besides an Ithaca ejects shells hard enough to put a knot on sombodys head ) .

Not long ago i bought a benelli nova pump , it will handle any thing from a wimpy ass 2 3/4" trap load to those big ass 3 1/2" anti air craft/turkey loads , 28" barrel with a set of choke tubes( i saw a slug barrel in cabellas for about $150) for $350 AFTER taxes .
More drastic plastic to go along with my Glock !!!

Yeah, that's a bit disconcerting at first, but like you say, it just keeps shooting, and shooting, and shooting...

I really don't expect to have to do more than rack the slide, but if I have to pull the trigger, I doubt I'd need more than one. Shotguns are like that.

Wolf, I will go to a show, but I need to go back to Penna to get it...no out-of-state purchases here yanno. I'm heavily leaning toward the Remington 870 more because of the warranty. It lasts forever, whereas the Mossberg expires. But that goofy little safety is inconvenient for my long fat fingers and the Mossberg has a nice big one right there behind the receiver. Sigh. Decisions, decisions. I'll keep you all informed.

Say hello to my little friend...the Remington 870! I got a good deal on it and I even found some flechette rounds too! The guy selling those also has rock salt rounds but didn't have them in stock just then. I'll drop by another time for those...

Someone's gonna have a real bad day, isn't a cloud of razor-edged metal shards enough? I spose salt it less likely to damage the furniture.
