12/10: Shark gunner
http://cellar.org/pictures/sharkgunner.jpg
As US soldiers jump into the Arabian sea for a bit of fun, another soldier holds gun in hand, on the lookout for sharks. Would that even work? Wouldn't they be just as likely to put a bullet through a swimmer? Can this program be extended through South Florida? Maybe they can get the nuclear subs to provide shark duty for a while. |
All that's missing from this picture is a plank ;-)

I think I remember reading that many divers carried "boom sticks" - basically, it was two poles - one wider than the other. The thinner tube went inside the larger tube, and at the end of the large tube was a shotgun shell. The thinner one had like a nail on the end. So when the thinner one was slammed into the larger one (presumably with the shell-end of the stick up against an attacking shark), the nail whapped the firing pin and BAM! You don't get eaten by a shark. But I could be making this up too. I'm pretty sure I read it, though. :) |
I think I an clarify this a bit
As I am in the Navy and have indulged in swim call more than once...
The gunner is not necessarily a marksman. The area is usually cleared of sharks with active sonar pings first. The swim area is one not frequented by sharks anyway. The gunner is there to make the swimmers felel better. Bullets are not dangerous below five feet or so. Sharks are not visible below ten feet and not more than 50 feet away. There is a picket boat a quarter mile out to keep sharks and other creepies away with the sound of the propeller as well as pick up errant swimmers. That's about it. Brian |
