1/20/2005: Hindu bull taming

Maybe you think the Spanish "running of the bulls" is a insane, needless, violent celebration that puts too many people and too many bulls in danger. But it's nothing compared to the Indian "jallikattu", sometimes part of the Indian Pongal, what sounds like a harvest/new season/thanksgiving sort of four-day holiday.

According to the wikipedia entry on Jallikattu: In Jallikattu, an agitated bull is set to run in an open space. Several people, empty handed, try to tame it by controlling its horns. The winner gets a prize, which is generally tied to the horns of the bull. On most occasions, the bulls are intoxicated with alcohol. Only men take part in this macho game. Sometimes, more than one bull is loose at the same time. The village farmers take this game as a display of their masculine strength. Betting is also common during the game.

Get the bull drunk and try to pull gold chains off of its horns. This year 13 people died and about 500 were wounded. Nice little practice!? This Telegraph story has more info.

I'm guessing that this guy in the pic with his neck bent double and the bull stoming on his chin (apparently) was one of the fatalities?

nah, but he is going to need a chiropractor. if i were a backcracker, i would move to the region and start traveling and sponsoring these events.

what? a little creative capitalism is a bad thing?

Elspode 01-20-2005 03:14 PM

Anyone who does anything this stupid, *on purpose*, deserves to be profiteered upon.

i think this thread could have something to do with evolutionary theory. not meaning life came from non-life, but more along the lines of survival of the fittest. if life really is a darwinian process, shouldn't the shallow end of the gene pool, be just about empty? how exactly do you find groups of people (excluding fraternities) that are stupid enough to see the consequences of this hobby and say, "yeah, let's do that some more"?

I'd just like to take this opportunity to point out that there are no women in the pic and I doubt there are any within miles. You never see groups of females doing this sort of thing. Hmmmm...wonder what it all means... ;)

jinx 01-20-2005 04:12 PM

We don't need to display our masculine strength?

Clodfobble 01-20-2005 04:15 PM

My masculine strength just happens to all be in my husband's body. :)

Quite an observation, Brianna.
There is a reason for that. Most women (I said MOST; not pointing any fingers, especially at you), are already busy getting drunk and chasing drunk men around in a futile effort to "tame" them. Only there are no prizes. Or are there? :drunk:

If this gets around you know for sure next year there is going to be a team of angry feminists demanding their turn at dying at the hands ... er ... horns of the bull.

The less brave - or foolhardy - watch from high bamboo platforms, along with the tourists, women and old men.
High intelligence = high platforms. :)
