3/24/2005: Record Easter egg
http://cellar.org/2005/easteregg.jpg
The Belgian chocolate producer "Guylian" made this chocolate egg with at least 50,000 bars on behalf of the city of St. Niklaas. The egg measured 8.32 metres high and beats the record of Kwazulu-Natal in South-Africa in 1996. That egg was 7.65 metres high. Twenty-six craftsman worked altogether 525 hours to build the egg. They needed 1950 kg of chocolates. Alderman Urbain Vercauteren of the city of St.Niklaas said the egg wasn't meant to be eaten. He said: "After a week outside in all weather conditions, I don't think it would be very tasteful." |
i'd like to see the bunny that laid that egg.

I was just thinking about this. And the absurdity of it. The waste. Then I realized how neat it was that rectangular bars were used to form the nice round shape. Then I realized that for some reason, that I can't explain, I would be more impressed if it was made of Legos. I mean, look at how tall it is! Imagine if that was all Legos. Instead, it's just chocolate that will be thrown away. What a waste.
I'm reminded of the previous LCO's (Large Chocolate Objects) featured here. The chocolate is probably cheap stuff that would taste bad anyway. Actually it would have been really neat if the chocolate bars were left in their wrappers and then given away after, like that pile of bananas in London. |
Not to worry, the rodents are eliminating waste every night...

wonder it if will start melting in the sun?
|
he doesn't think it will be "...very TASTEFUL"-??? Lost in translation...amigo.
|
I suppose this is cheapass *hollow* world record giant Easter egg? I tell you, they just don't make stuff like they did when I was a kid....grumble, grumble, bitch, moan...
|
I'd like to test that theory on whether or not it is "tasteful". It does look like it's covered and I'd scrape the top layer off first. Yum, belgian chocolate.
Of course, it's possible and even likely that they used a crappy chocolate for this, picked for structural integrity rather than strength. |

Not all Belgian Chocolates are created equal. Guylian is so low on the chocolate food chain that Wal-Mart doesn't carry it. I've seen it (and bought it to be distributed at social functions, because it looks classy) at OddJob, which is (was, sorry, they're in the midst of a going out of business sale) what I call a "more than a Dollar Store," i.e., still really cheap, but sometimes of higher quality than you find in the average Dollar Store. I still have and use a very nice ceramic teapot I bought from there about 10 years ago. (Oh dear. I think I'm getting overly parenthetical again. I'll need to have the meds checked.) |
Hey, if anyone is interested, my local chipshop has decided to sell deep fried Easter Eggs. I tried to find the post about the deep fried Mars bars that got such a big response, but couldnt. If anyone wants pictures of this crime against healthy eating, tell me and i'll put a pic on the Aberdeen thread.

That I've got to see.
