aw man. I wanted the nigerian guy to get it.

How this guy fits in with olives is anyone's guess.

smoothmoniker 04-19-2005 11:59 AM

hmmmm. interesting. I found this in the google cache.

Not surprised.

What I am now interested in hearing is why he chose that particular name.

Incidentally, I heard it here first. The Cellar is my primary news source.

Only after I read SM's post did I check Fox News.

I told you in the other thread that this pope is next to last, based on St. Malachy.

I read a couple things about name choice and how it reflects on the ideals of the pope. Like, if he had chosen Pius, it would've indicated he was against Vatican II, and if he chose JPIII, it would show that he's going to continue JPII's work. Benedict seems to carry very little political baggage, at least to my untrained eye.

I'd be impressed if he decided to actually fix the Catholic Church. But to do that, he'd have to admit that no human being can be the "infallible voice of God" or whatever nonsense they call him, and then he'd be just another worker bee. Kind of Christlike, really, but oh well. We have traditions to uphold. [/teeny troll]

Rather concervative type it seems. Well, he is nearly 80, there'll be a new one before long. JP2 was an anomoly.

OnyxCougar 04-19-2005 12:47 PM

actually, from the cached site, it says that peter (the one after benedict) will NOT be the last pope. he says there will be many more popes until christ returns, in 2437.

Also from the cached site:

[In an earlier version of this article, I thought that John Paul II would die in 2003. Then I thought, 2004. Now I think, soon. Also, in the previous version of this article, I thought that Pope Benedict XVI would die in 2009, now I think 2009 or 2010.]
I wonder if the earlier version of the article was written in 2002 or 2003?

i think the author of that article should look into John Titor. they would get along well.

Apparently a German Cardinal knows nothing about a legacy of the Arnold family.

Conte's full of shit. Stretching doesn't begin to describe what he's done to Malachy's list.

Pope #110 on St. Malachy's list is given the phrase: “From the Labor of the Sun.” [4] What kind of labor does the sun do? The sun's work, so to speak, is to travel around the earth. The sun constantly travels around the world. And so does Pope John Paul II. He is the most traveled Pope in history.
The Sun travels around the Earth? Good grief.

ah, the wonder of isogesis - reading one's conclusion into the text. Seems normal with most "fulfilled" prophecies.

linked it for entertainment value, btw, not as a real substantive piece of prophetic wonder.

It's so nice to have a pope who was a hitler youth. I'm sure he'll be an understanding, tolerant, kind-hearted, flexible pope who loves everyone including sinners just like all the hitler youth who grew up and became professors of dogmatic theology with Marxist leanings.

Joseph Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, in Bavaria, the son of a police officer who was staunchly anti-Nazi. In 1937 Ratzinger's father retired and settled in the town of Traunstein. When Ratzinger turned 14 in 1941, he joined the Hitler Youth, as was required by a 1938 law. According to National Catholic Reporter correspondent and biographer John Allen, Ratzinger was an unenthusiastic member who refused to attend any meetings. In 1943, at the age of 16, he and the rest of his class were drafted into the Flak or anti-aircraft corps, responsible for guarding a BMW plant outside Munich. This plant manufactured aircraft engines and used slave labor from the Dachau concentration camp. He was then sent for basic infantry training and was posted to Austrian-Hungarian border, where he worked setting up anti-tank defenses. After being shipped back to Bavaria, he deserted in May 1945 and returned to Traunstein.
Doesn't sound like he was a very good Nazi. ;)
