New food pyramid from FDA

Remember when we had the four food groups, and the FDA tossed them out in favor of the food pyramid?

Well, it's tossed the food pyramid out now too.

Now they have 12 different food pyramids, based on individual lifestyles and nutritional needs.

They have a website that you can visit and fill in some info to see your own personalized food pyramid. It's a little slow right now, since it was just unveiled, but it's worth checking out.

It's probably worth mentioning that these new food pyramids were not produced by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), but rather the USDA (US Dept of Agriculture). So they should, at the risk of punning, be taken with a grain of salt. The USDA's committment is to Agriculture, not the individual, so their views are a bit biased.

Also, I hate the new design... the stacked pyramid communicated the relative amounts of each section more clearly. This new design is like a retarded 1/4 pie chart.

the guy who designed the layout of that thing should be sent to graphic design purgatory.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach, work for the government.

breakingnews 04-20-2005 08:44 AM

The new graphic is ... well, pointless. Why they stuck with the pyramid thing is beyond me - what they are purporting to show is much better suited for a pie graph, no?

Mmm ... apple pie ...

Anyway, brilliant use of government money. Many kudos (mmm ... kudos ...) to Washington.

This has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever scene. First, there is no reason why I need to eat 2200 calories a day. Second, the lay out is so dumb... apparrently, I'm supposed to eat an equal amount of everything - so yay for the government's permission to eat as much candy as leafy, green veggies.

breakingnews 04-20-2005 01:23 PM

The sections aren't actually equal. If you look closely, some are bigger/smaller. But not so obvious from the retarded graphic, is it??

My food pyramid

Meats and Greasy Foods: 5 servings a day
Starch: 3 servings a day
Salty snacks: 3 servings a day
Alcohol: 1-2 servings a day
Fruits: 1-2 servings a week
Vegetables: Use sparingly (e.g. accidentally eating some of the garnish)

What, you don't like ketchup?

It's a pain in the ass to try to pick the onions and peppers out of the cheesesteak.

I find it's easier to order it without them.

Peppers are fruit and onions are starches in my taxonomy. And I actually don't like ketchup.

Why is the United States age-sex population pyramid so much different than that of Mexico? When you look at Mexico's age-sex population pyramid it looks more like a pyramid, whereas the United States does not? Why would you say there is such a difference?

xoxoxoBruce 02-16-2010 04:06 PM

What does the age-sex population pyramid have to do with food? Just googling pyramid for a place to land? What does India's pyramid look like?

Or the Egyptians!
