Graphical smilies are the devil.

I cannot begin to express my contempt for graphical smiles.

I mean, you type something one way, and the damned computer changes what you say! When I type ':)', I mean ':)'! Thank God most places let you disable them -- but I still think they should be disabled by default.

This random rant brought to you by Juju, and the letter 'G'. Thank you..

How cute! You use Gaim!

verbatim 12-30-2001 06:40 PM

I use gaim. Nothing wrong with it, and it makes some of the best logfiles around.

But, just for the records, Trillian does that too.

Undertoad 12-30-2001 07:40 PM

I actually agree about the smilies, and I tried briefly to find the option to make the default "off", but in a moment of lameness, I couldn't find it! I think I'll just leave it where it is... hey, I turned off avatars, be thankful.

I use Gaim. It's great. I keep in close touch with the developers. Know the new option to have the alias be shown in the tab? That was mine.

I was refering to his "and the letter G" comment. It used to be in the About screen for Gaim, but was removed a while ago.

what?
smilies are an important part of internet conversatoin, they start to make up for what text lacks in comparison to voice - tone.

Graphical smilies, jaggy. Graphical.

elSicomoro 12-31-2001 12:41 AM

AOLIM does the same thing. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to see if there is a way to turn them off.

*follows in sycamore's nightly routine*

There is. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to tell you how. :)

like a little clown. :)

jennofay 01-02-2002 10:44 PM

Avatars? Ohmighod...I don't know whether to be grateful or to retch.
I'll have to do both. One still occasionally sees folks wander into IRC with Microsoft Chat markup:

CLUELESS: **** appears as Gilgamesh

Ardax 01-03-2002 08:07 AM

I don't mind the graphical smilies, they're OK. I just hate that they don't have noses. Noses rule.

:-)

:-P

:-D

:-O

;-)

Narf?

jennofay 01-03-2002 11:41 AM

like i said. there is a lot to be said for things without noses...they are cute and all, but noses give much more realism to things (not that a graphical smilie is 'realistic'....) im a fan of round noses though. :0)

dave 01-03-2002 01:18 PM

I never was a fan of the nose in a smiley, graphical or otherwise. I just prefer them without. I guess it's just personal taste (unlike Pad Gai, which is universally appealing, even to vegetarians, who lust after its amazing rice noodles but can't eat them because they're smothered in perfectly cooked chicken). Mmmm, pad gai. Okay, I'm off topic now. :)
