Conflated

con·flate
tr.v. con·flat·ed, con·flat·ing, con·flates
To bring together; meld or fuse: “The problems [with the biopic] include... dates moved around, lovers deleted, many characters conflated into one” (Ty Burr).
To combine (two variant texts, for example) into one whole.

Somewhere along the way folks were talking about whether or not GWB and his unindicted co-conspirators "conflated" 911 and the Iraq War. In my view, the administration generally stayed away from specifically linking the two events, however, they worked very hard to create a culture of fear in this country rooted in 911. This allowed for the impression that the President's first priority was the safety of the American people therefor Iraq had to have something to do with addressing our security. That is conflation. Two narratives became one with media hacks doing the dirty work, while the administration remained silent or at most unenthusiastically denied a connection. I can see however that if someone mistakenly believed invading a Arab country would make Americans safer, they could separate those things... maybe?

Americans, taken as a whole, are pretty dim. It doesn't take much to confuse them. The unique thing about Americans is that they will fight tooth and nail for what they believe in. Over time, the ability to convince people of what they should believe in has grown, and in recent times, grown rather large.

You have to wonder just how much effort was necessary to for this conflation to be brought about.

The adminstration is still referring to the Iraq war as 'The War on Terror'. Cheyney was still keeping the concept alive in the fall of 2003.

Now that our invasion has mustered every militant in the Middle East into Iraq past borders more porous than the US-Mexican border, the Iraq-terror link has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That's the beauty of it.

A little conflation of the information turns into an inflation of the situation.

Unfortunately, the inflamation of the situation turned into conflagration.

I think there's a cream for that.
