Old Forge, NY

Old Forge is a mountain resort town located in the Adirondack State Park. It's sits at the south end of the Fulton Chain of lakes (First Lake) and along side the Moose River. Some pictures hanging in a cafe' in town depict its history of logging and tourism.

Here's the cafe

On the left is the railroad, on the right is the Clearwater, a ferry/tour boat that cruised the lake chain.

When I lived here in Old Forge *cough* years ago, they called this boat the Clearwater II, since the original Clearwater burned. I guess they dropped the II at some point...

Must...go...somewhere...else...soon.

Is that LJ in the lantern aisle wearing socks with sandals? Also, what the hell kind of roofing material is that on the Hemmer Cottage? Looks like standing seam tarp...

Happy Monkey 06-18-2005 10:45 AM

Makes me want to watch Twin Peaks...

It was cold , I was wearing socks and flip flops so I can't say anything...

Metal. Steep metal roofs are common - beats shoveling or cave-in.

Looking again at that picture I was suddenly distracted ... oooh ... splatterware (I don't know what the stuff is really called, but I like the effect of the splattered glazes) teapots!

a pretty cool map of old forgewhat a cool little town. we didnt have enough time to really soak it in. coming back to work today was pretty brutal. everyone up there is NICE. sure, they know that tourist $$ drives the town, but you even see them being nice to each other. I want to live in a town like that. dammit.

Griff 06-18-2005 07:17 PM

Heh, the Uncas. I'm reading The Last of the Mohicans right now as chance would have it.

jinx 12-11-2005 12:34 PM

Well it's hard to tell from this non-quality image, but the Uncas and Clearwater are in dry dock now (center of photo, far side of pond).

We just got back from a vacation in OF. We took the kids with us and rented a nice camp on Second Lake, Camp Sorella.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL205/.../121499795.jpg

It was very homey and warm and we all really enjoyed our stay. I parked myself in front of the fireplace and burned a lot of wood, Jim enjoyed the big red couch and achieved a record high score on his phone's Bejeweled game. (Oh, we forgot our camera. These pics were taken with disposables and suck unfortunately)

We rented snowmobiles ("sleds" in local vernacular) for 2 days and hit the trails. The kids were nervous at first but eventually saw the fun in it, and were demanding to go faster towards the end.

The next 3 pics are taken from the "green bridge" and can be compared to the first 3 photos in this post, taken in June.
