Recall roster
 

OK, when i thought of this earlier it made perfect sense, but now... what the hell, i will keep going.

Many of you know eachother IRL but most of us are separated by a few miles and sometimes an ocean or two. that means that our only interaction is through the cellar (which is fun), but what happens if something happens to the cellar? if our friends at the RDC are able to bring the site down for an extended period of time is there any back up plan? any way to reconnect people?

I was also thinking about this a little bit this morning after Jag posted to let us know he was fine. what if something did happen to one of the regular posters and they just disappeared? do we have any way of knowing what happened to them or will it just be one of those mysteries? i've been wondering what happened to beestie recently - he just fell off the map.
If i got hit by a bus tomorrow, would anyone in the cellar want to know about it? don't answer that - i may be the wrong example, but i think you get the point.

example: if smoothmoniker were to get hit by a bus tomorrow, after awhile we'd probably wonder where he went. due to his international fame :) we could probably track him down through google and such, but he is the exception.

i don't really know where i'm going with this, but it seems like there should be someway for cellarites to know what happened if something happens to another cellarite.

being old military that i am, my thought was some variation on a recall roster. obviously not everyone here wants everyone else to know who they are IRL, but there must be someway to make it work.

UT could export the email addresses of those who registered them, and upload a roster to a neutral location for storage?

*snugs tin foil hat*

If those asshats bring down the cellar, they could possibly get the list.

Actually, in this other forum one of the members died. only one other member knew him IRL and told the forum's admin, who posted an announcement. The guy was only 40 and it was a shock.

Our forum grew out of a biz news site that closed the forums w/o notice. One of the members started a new forum at his own shared host and sent out email to as many folks as he had addy's for in his inbox. Emails to friends of friends built the community back up in a new location.

Another time our site went down and had to be moved to a new hosting company. Folks found each other and registered at a small lightly used forum (can't post link here obviously).

You can all pick another forum to meet at in case this place is down for an extended period of time. But, you can't post that location here. It must be shared with known friends thru PM or email.

Well, the asshats can't close it down really. I know it looks like they can, but in reality everything is safely backed up, multiple different ways; and I'm only letting them in until I can (once and for all) move this thing. It's just more convenient that way because otherwise I have to convert a system that I don't want to convert yet, ysee?

i have faith in you UT. honestly my mind was more was geared more to the "what if someone who isn't connected IRL kicks off?" it would just seem sad if someone who spent a lot of time here and had built friendships died without anyone knowing.

no i don't have ESP or expect anyone to die, but you never know.

We actually had a situation many years ago (dialup) where a member was struck by a car down in University City and suffered severe head trauma. Somehow his brother got his password and made a point of posting information on his condition to the board.

Also, there was the late, lamented Richh, who died and few knew of his passing. I knew because we were friends but lost track of him after he moved to Oregon. I was shocked and saddened to hear that he had passed.

I think I am a likely candidate for an unnoticed passing. I took stock of my friends and wondered what would happen if I had a stroke or something right then. Who would know or even notice? I get a visitor maybe once a quarter. My bills are paid electronically. I have no close neighbors to notice the smell. It could conceivably be six months before anyone wondered enough about my silence to actually investigate. Easily. :scared:

I wouldn't want any mourning for me anyway, but a quick RIP notice would be nice, and if some people want to hoist a frosty one in my memory, that would be nice too. Not that I plan on kicking the bucket anytime soon, but still. I'd do it for you, after all.

It would be interesting to be able to see a synopsis of the lives of everyone who's come to the cellar. I know OC has quite a dramatic past, as do several others. But out of the thousands of people who come through here as lurkers and/or play along for awhile, there must be a lot of eye-popping stories.

By virtue of the hit count alone, we've could easily have been visited by serial rapists or murderers, famous entertainers (or a combination -- hi, Jacko), heads of state, holocaust survivors, people who make glass dildos, spies, preachers, heroin addicts, people possessed by demons, puppy farm owners, all kinds of interesting stuff.

There's also a chance that everyone is as boring as me, but I refuse to admit it.

Anyway, the point is, there could have been some spectacular reasons for people not coming back to the Cellar, and it would be interesting to know them all.

And some would slip away unnoticed. ;)
