Anybody remember the book by Michael Crichton? Came out in the 70s, I believe (I kind of remember reading it in high school the first time). It was made into a movie with George Segal.

It was about this guy, see, who had these electrodes implanted into his brain to control this rare kind of seizure activity, and like it backfired in a Frankensteinian kind of way ...

Anyhow, This isn't quite the same thing.

They are going to be doing implantations of these devices in at least one local hospital. Not mine, we don't do the surgery thing, but a rep showed up at the nuthouse today to try to set up to do a presentation, as it's hoped that we might be part of the referral stream. I'm interested from the standpoint that if they start putting these things into patients, I will likely end up seeing folks with them, so it probably wouldn't hurt to understand what it's doing.

Can't be worse than ECT, right?

I wonder where the other 20% go and how they effect the patient?

There's plenty of other kinds of crazy. This one is is only for depression.

Frankly, I'd love to be cured out of a job. I could make lovely beaded jewelry and do psychic readings.

I remember reading my father's copy when I was around 11 or 12, and discovering a little handmade envelope taped inside the back cover. Years earlier, probably in the early 80s, he had stumbled upon a medical article discussing the future of almost the exact procedure used in the book, and had saved it.
