Translation please

in surfing around another cellarwannabe site i came across this for someone's sig line:

از جملهٌ رفتگان اين راه دراز

باز آمده كيست تا به ما گويد راز

پس بر سر اين دو راهٌ آز و نياز

تا هيچ نماني كه نميايي باز

the website is irankicks which seems to be dedicated to soccer err um futbol. anyway, wtf does the above mean?

"You are an infidel and you should die."

Griff 08-26-2005 10:37 AM

We may be 500 years behind the West but at least our futbol team sucks ass.

Buzzed beautified him [rft]گ[aan] where sees him [draaz] --
Falcon [EEmdh] courteous [taa] in him what گ[wyd] Raz --
پ[s] land rejoiced where echoes sees him [EEz] and [nyaaz] --
[taa] [hy]چ sleeps me as him [nmyaayy] falcon

A lot of the arabic translation sites went paid given their recent popularity ... this is what you get out of one of the remaining free ones.

Its camel incited that mended گ that where Deraz saw it

A falcon I supply it a tactful Ta by it what is گ and Raz's hand

پ س a benevolence pleased where dos saw it he incited and Niaz

Ta is چ that Kh Nmiae developed a falcon

At least the site Wolf found seems to make more sense than the one I did.

Why don't you ask the person what it means?

It appears that a falcon is a common literary tool among Sufis but I can't wring a poem out of this one.

I haven't gotten a translation yet, but I'm working on it. It is not Arabic, perhaps Farsi or Urdu.

I did find it fascinating that the text flows from right to left. As an experiment, place your cursor in the middle of a line of english text, press and hold the left button down as though you're going to select some text, then drag the mouse cursor downward one line. You'll see the highlight jump to the end of the line, which for English would be to the far right of the line.

Now, release the mouse button and try the exercise again using some of the unknown script-looking text. Mouse cursor in the middle of the line, press and hold the left button, and drag it downward one line. Where does the highlight jump to? To the far LEFT hand side of the line. Just as it should since the flow of the text for this language is right to left, top to bottom. [/nerd]

Yeah, that whole backwards text thing made me crazy too as I was trying to cut and paste the quote into the translator.

I'm assuming that it's something from Rumi.

wolf 08-26-2005 01:40 PM

A perfect falcon, for no reason,
has landed on your shoulder,
and become yours.

Rumi

or

O goodly spirit! O pure essence!
How long must you wander and hustle?
You are the king's falcon; hence,
Fly back to the king's whistle.

Rumi

I doubt that this has anything at all to do with the poem in question.

Although I have kind of gathered that the falcon is often a metaphor for Islam in Sufic poetry. I don't know for sure, this is an assumption garnered from a relatively brief google search and scan of a dozen or so poetry pages.

It's not "All your bases are belonging to us?" Well...than I got nothing.

Happy Monkey 08-26-2005 02:23 PM

if I looking for falcon
him name is flykin brown falcon

P.S. I'll find my falcon.

Elspode 08-26-2005 02:34 PM

I'm pretty sure it actually translates into something like, "Jeez...we're sitting on top of a sea of oil, and even *we* are smart enough to be going nuclear in a big way. Stupid Infidels."
