Tuesday is going to be a looooooong day!

this afternoon, sitting in my cube dwelling mike from the flight school called and said he had an "emergency" and could i take tomorrow off (tuesday). sure i said, what's the deal? here it is: i launch at 6 am tomorrow morning in our long range cessna 172 (12 hour endurance) to be callsign "relay1" and my mission, thanks to katrina, is to go to 10,000 feet and relay messages from the helecopters offshore to their base in abbeville louisiana because they lost their communications tower during the storm. this is going to be at least 10 hours of relay messaging and then another couple just to get in position and back. that's 868 bucks worth of free time give or take! woohoo! oh, and i'll try and remember my camera to take what pictures of the storms aftermath but i doubt there will be very much to see from FL100.

Don't tell me you circle for 10 hours straight... :yelsick:

plthijinx 08-29-2005 07:21 PM

yeah. unfortunately but i'll change it up a little bit. 50 mile legs in different directions. just as long as i'm in radio contact.....

Undertoad 08-29-2005 07:28 PM

Oh, 50 miles, I thought you'd have to stay in just one spot or so. That's much better.

Can't they combine that with some other thing? Like, yer gonna be up there anyway, might as well drop sandwiches for the lost cable news anchors, and do traffic reports for the interstates, and run pesticides for the upper 40, and train a few hijackers on how to turn but not takeoff or land.

it helps. just as long as i'm in radio contact...

That's a long day. Is that a good stunt plane to while away the hours? ;)

plthijinx 08-29-2005 08:36 PM

nah it's a slug

Happy Monkey 08-29-2005 09:02 PM

Well, happy birthday anyway.

thanks happy, just got home. i was wheels up at 6:25 a.m. and wheels down just after 8:30 p.m. i'm whipped. 3 breaks in between for a total of 13.2 hours today behind the yoke. i think i took some cool pics and i'll post'em later. i had control of 10 choppers restaffing the offshore rigs. taking their flight plans checking on them if they didn't call in on time. good group of guys they were, we cut up quite abit today which made the time pass a little. scuttlebutt has it that new orleans is toast as well as gulf port too. i haven't seen the news today and probably won't cuz i'm just exhausted. a few of my choppers couldn't land on their rigs b/c of damage so there's plenty of offshore work to be done......

late.
it's bed time.

Thank you for doing your part to help.

plthijinx 09-01-2005 03:08 PM

well i'm going back tomorrow. this time i'm scheduled to leave at 6:00 a.m. onlly this time i'm going to fly over N.O. and take some pics from 10,500 feet. they have what's called a TFR (temporary flight restriction) in place from the surface to 5,000 ft so i should have no problem taking some pics of the area.
