iTunes help, please

I have Windows XP, fully patched, on my Dell laptop. I recently reinstalled *everything* on my system, from the OS on up. When the time came to reinstall iTunes, the program went in ok, but my music collection is hashed in iTunes only. It plays all the tunes, but with a high frequency cutout, like if you were to sing into a running box fan, or rapidly tap your adam's apple while singing. Many (continuous) brief interruptions of the playback. It sounds like staccato rhythm being rapped out on the play button. The playback of the stored unDRMed files is crap and the direct play of all music cds is crap. Both examples work fine in Windows Media Player. The system behaves as though iTunes' turn for a processor cycle isn't coming frequently enough. But the system is not overloaded, it's loafing. 90% idle, according to Task Manager.

I have uninstalled iTunes, and reinstalled it--same result. Repaired installation--same result. Reverted to an earlier version of iTunes--same result. I *like* iTunes, and would *like* to keep using it as my preferred music player on this machine. But the sound is unacceptable.

I would be grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.

I would check my Direct X version and my soundcard drivers. Then I'd have a beer.

Diet coke.

Did that fix it?
