War on Terror

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/tra...cuments/02.jpg

CNN discovers Al Qaeda document cache.

The Washinton Post buys Al Qaeda laptop.

CNN interrogates John Walker, and interview footage submitted as evidence.

Are the media independent war correspondents, or warriors in the war on terrorism?

I think that everyone is fighting the war on terrorism. Whether this is good or not, I'm not sure. But as Tony said before, basically every U.S. citizen has been deputized...

The media is doing what it has had to do because they have been locked out of the loop by the Pentagon. On Presidential orders, nobody says anything, few details of anything are revealed, there is no pool footage like there used to be in the Gulf War. So what are they supposed to do? Go there themselves and try to collect information wherever possible.

In the Walker case, I'm sure that someone decided that it would be a good idea if the TV cameras and reporter had a go at talking to him. And I saw the whole interview -- the interviewer, whose name I forget, was very good. In probing for information, he led by relaxing Walker. He'd ask about where Walker got into the country, or something, by saying he had some friends who did such-n-such, making the whole thing conversational.
