Oil Drum

In this site I've found some good reading for folks who have no idea about oil. Start on links at bottom and it gives a good account of the oilfield. There may be more post in line with these. But haven't took time to find them. oil field

Having got to the site then it has to be prepared, among other things we need to have a way of getting the cuttings that come out of the hole separated from the drilling mud, and then having a place to put both them, and to store the mud until it can be drawn back into the pumps and circulated back into the hole. And we need to create an initial hole, or cellar, where we can start the drilling pipe into the ground. (You can see a layout of this here or here. This initial part of the well has to be fairly large, for reasons explained below.
Maybe this is one of the search triggers!

Could be. I wish he would post a link to all in order. I'll run the whole thing down one day. The cellar is always the lowest point of work, on land, offshore. It's roughneck speak. I've never roughnecked, but have welded on rigs. Boy what fun to weld something in the cellar, mud up to you donkey on land and damn peole dropping 36" pipe wrenches on you, washing down the rig. Been there.

I guess catching a 36" pipe wrench qualifies you for the rest of the day off, yeah? Or maybe the rest of the month? Damn!

I only highlighted "the cellar" for the name recognition, of course.

I agree with you on the link situation. I have started with the page you linked to, read the top link, gone back in my browser, chosen the next lower link, read, back, repeat. I'm about a quarter of the way through. Very educational. Thanks for the link, bb.
