What dose it Mean??

To use the Lords Name in Vain??

I think I kinda of know but I'm not sure. Isn't like saying stuff about Jesus that isn't true??

The reason I asked is because I was reading this book about Christian Humor and one of the Jokes was this: "Stop using my name in vain and I'll make rush hour traffic go away".

qcc??

"in vain" means "to no 'good' end" in this case. That is to say, when you call upon God, when you say his name, you should be earnestly and religiously calling upon him in prayer, not cursing or expressing surprise or anything.

Being brought up Catholic I "blasphemed" on a regular basis.
The inverted commas are not because I am atheist, just that it wasn't seen by us as blasphemy.
And when I decided I was swearing too much I went back to those habits.

Working now in a C of E school, not only do I find myself saying shoot for shit, I also say Oh my goodness for OMG and back to Jeanie Mac (a teen exclamation of uncertain origin) for Jesus Christ.

And not only that, advising the children to say "Oh my goodness" or even "Oh my gosh" too! It's a weird headspace. I still say Knickers! or Pants! and I still get looked at frowningly by auld wifies and young mothers sometimes. As if I'd said something filthy. I think it's because I say it with aggression/ frustration and it takes a while to filter through that it wasn't actually a rude word.

A METEOROID, a naturally-occurring object in space, becomes a METEOR when it enters the earth's atmosphere; and if it survives that fall, it becomes a METEORITE when it lands on the ground.

It's not a joke. It's just a statement of fact. Friend of mine asked what's the difference between meteor and meteorite, what dose it mean?, and I thought I would share it here.

The joke is that people swear in rush hour traffic. So God is saying, stop swearing and I'll get rid of rush hour, but if he'd just get rid of rush hour no one would be swearing in the first place.
