Musical Instruments

Other night Emeril live was on. Was a band member who had a shiny cylinder and was making a noise, music with it. What is it? Looks like something we made as kids from a can and hair from a horse's tail, little pine rosin. Can't rmember what we called it. I know some on here play drums & in bands so can someone help me out?

Was it just a shaker of some kind? Looked like a martini shaker, and went "sshhtt, sshhtt..."?

Not a shaker. I never saw him use it. Just some off the wall sounds while the band was playing. Reminded me of the above can thing. Think was called a bull something, if I can remeber till coffee time I'll ask someone.

That sounds like a theremin, but they are supposed to be really hard to play.

A theremin consists of a box, a hoop, an upright antenna looking thingy and a lot of electronic circuitry. You can't mistake it for anything else, whether you see it or hear it.

Hey cool! There's a theramin orchestra in Austin, TX!! (I know the lady on the left. She is very, very cool).

The name of the thing is "dumb bull." This is what I found on Google. " Bob Short had a dumb-bull,a keg with a strip of raw-hide stretched across one end like
a drum-head, while the other remained open. A waxed cord
inserted in the middle of the drum-head, and reaching down
through the keg, completed the instrument. The pulling of
the hand over this cord made a hideous bellowing, hence
its name.
