March 9th, 2018: Stairway to… Upstairs
Stairways are a functional tool to get from down here to up there where the toilet and sex are. They let you avoid swinging on a vine like Tarzan, or climbing a ladder with beer and snacks. But they are pretty boring unless you use a little imagination, think outside the box. One word of advice… ok, five words… DO NOT GET A PERMIT. If you screw up and do get a permit, you must have a defibrillator handy when the inspector comes. Trust me, you could be charged with manslaughter.

Stairways are one of the most tightly regulated parts of a building, and at first glance, each of these stairways violates US building codes. EXCEPT the white one on the top and the one with the slide. I don't think there is a section of the building code that covers slides. But I wouldn't put a slide next to a massive window like that unless the window was tempered glass.
I love most of these staircases though. |

While most of those are esthetic delights, some are orthopedic surgeons' and tort attorneys' dreams.
The one with he guy getting ready to land on his desk gives me shivers. Maybe someone knows more than I do about ankles, but the one with slanted steps seems like a booby trap. And, while the staggered ones work well, don't get off on the wrong foot. Gotta like the slide. |

Slanted steps? If you mean the one in the middle of the bottom group that was taken looking down from the top.
I wouldn't trust any of them except maybe top center and bottom left in the top group... and the slide doesn't look big enough for my ass.

When i was very little - I lived in a house with a stair case that went nowhere. A set of wooden stairs that went up and ended in blank wall.
Dad built them. No - I don't really know why.

Maybe plans to expand later.
Or a secret door with a second family.

Those non-spiral staircases are all right-handed

Yeah, those slanted stairs, a la M.C. Escher.
I can't figure the illusion but this helps some: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/259590366005963517/ You don't walk on the slanted part. Me, I'd stay downstairs. |

Yeah, that shows the design type looking down, looking up, and from the side.
Lots of stairs at that link and damn few of them legal.
