US Recognizes Syrian Rebels as Legitimate Government
Today, we recognized the Free Syrian Army and its supporters as the legitimate government of Syria. I sure don't support Assad, but 29 of these Syrian rebel groups have pledged allegiance to the Nusra Front which has been linked to al-Qaeda.
I really think this is going to be a bad situation with any outcome for the US. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Remember all those years ago when everybody wanted us out of El Salvador?
Well, I'd like to see us out of the Middle East altogether. I am sick to death of these fights over sand and oil and Jesus Christ and all of it. I am Siq of Iraq, Siq of Iran and Siq of Syria and Israel and all those places. Why can't we just leave? Leave them alone----frack here (though I'm against it they're going to do it anyway) and drain Canada of her oil (which we already do) fuck. Let China fight for awhile over there.

Today as in the past couple hours? This is why I hate it when my insomnia leaves me awake after dawn but too sleepy to watch the news.
If we can provide economic, political, OR military support to the pro-self-determination factions in Syria, in any combination, we should - but, as with anywhere else in the long-colonized Middle East, we need to be careful to stop short of promoting our own agenda, and show the people there that we do not mean to continue being an imperial-colonial power in their lives. Because that's the biggest reason they hate colonial/imperial/western powers like us - because we cause so many of their problems. If they could trust us not to interfere with their self-governance like we have so often in their pasts, they wouldn't oppose us so vehemently.

If we just left the people to their own devices....I wonder what would happen then?
