The image server has served up 50,000 copies of the images that people have "hotlinked" to, i.e., they are using the Cellar's bandwidth to show the images. Most of these are on other message boards. Here are some of the worse hitters. The numbers are the number of images they've seen by hot-linking:

That's just the hotlinkers. I estimate there are now 8000 sites linking to the thread!
And only about 12 new registrations. Not up twice from normal! These visitors have no visible value to us, except for one thing... those thousands of links will raise the site's Google Page Rank. What comes of that, who knows... we all have a little more importance on the net, I suppose. We must promise to only use this power for good, and never for evil. |

Naw man... you get as much credit as I do and we both combined get fuck-all else for it... except for the smug self-satisfaction of course, which I always enjoy.

Our main server traffic. The first burst happened the night of Apr 7 when Fark and Boing Boing linked the Pakistani ferris wheel. The second burst started the night of Apr 13 when Boing Boing linked the thread for the foam test.
Since the first link was to the blog view, it generated fewer hits per page and we could handle that traffic well. After the first round of performance improvements on Apr 16, the server continued to get hit from the new round of linkers. The columns go: visitors, pages, hits, overall bandwidth. I moved the foam images to the backup server to lighten the load on the main server. Here are the backup server's numbers. Since it's only the JPGs, there were no visitors to track or pages to load, but 11 hits per visit to the main thread: |

It was kind of wild while it happened, but I'm glad the Cellar is working again.

The steady traffic seem substantially higher now, than before this all went down.

Well, I'll admit that's the thread that got me here, but it was probably the WTF thread that hooked me good and proper. But as I've said, it's awesome here.

Well done UT - I'm not sure I understood a tenth of what you were saying but I get the feeling you now have things under control. Glad you're at the helm and not a dinosaur like me!

UT, now's the time to strike, while the iron is still, if not hot, rather warm to the touch.
Grab Staceyv's picture of the whale penis and make it the Friday IOTD this week. Kill two birds with one stone. Thank me later for this amazing revelation in Google-rigging.
