OK Wolf, OK. It's not a Komondor. I was mistaken. Write down the date and time and save for posterity. Sheeeeeesh!

That's a handsome looking dog, FD. Interesting name too, is there a story behind that?

I think my brother was visiting our parents in Pensacola and we were clearing some brush from part of their woods when my brother asked what kind of bushes these were we replied that they were yopon holly bushes (also spelled yaupon) .. he thought we were making it up...then on the trip back to Denver, they stopped at a cousins and picked up the dog...next thing you know it was named Yopon.

He really is a great dog....one of his fun tricks is that if either of my brothers boys leave the front door open, you just have to tell Yopon to go close it ... and he will....of course he puts his weight behind the push to close the door so all the windows in the house rattle....but the door is closed.

Our schnauzer Heidi has been having some health issues for the past few months. She's been having lots of 'little' accidents in the house, and when we let her out, she squats for what seems like hours, but doesn't 'do' anything. She's been to the vet at least once a month for the past 6 months, and has been on antibiotics for what seems like just as long. She's had moments of being disoriented, and is getting lost when she's outside at night, because she can barely see.

This past week she fell over, and couldn't get up. She was a little unsteady when she was able to try and walk, and really wasn't her pleasant little doggy self. We scheduled an appointment at the vet for last week, who referred Heidi to a specialist for a CAT scan and Ultrasound. The vet said he was fairly certain from her blood tests that she had a tumor of some sort, but wanted to have the specialist look at her just to be sure.

Mom just got home from the Vet not too long ago. The results of the CAT scan weren't good. Heidi has bladder cancer, and it's apparently spread all through her. The Vet said they could operate, but it wouldn't give her more than a few months longer, and any medicine they gave her would make her very ill. Mom's decided that the best thing to do for her is to put her to sleep.

This weekend was the last time I got to see her. The vet suggested we do this sooner rather than later, because she's already starting to suffer. Mom's on the way to the Vet now, and is making sure Heidi's getting her last bunch of french fries and a chicken nugget or two..(Her favorite people foods).

What makes this harder still, is today is the 7th anniversary of my Grandfather's death, and he and Heidi were fast friends. (More than likely because he always had a snausage or two for her). I'm trying to convince myself that he decided he wanted some company, and if given the chance, picked her.

I'm gonna miss you puppers. I remember the night Mom brought you home, when you were so tiny and all paws and ears. Your enthusiasm for anything even remotely fun. All the goofy little 'dog' games you got us to play with you, your little green stuffed elephant, the way you figured out on your own to ring the sleigh bells when you wanted out - and how we had to take them away from you because you'd ring them for attention, the way you would knock your head against the cupboard when you wanted a boney, and your knack for eating an entire frosty paws without spilling a drop on the carpet.

You've been a huge part of our lives for the past 13 years. I hope Doggy heaven will be everything you want it to be. Lots of chewey toys, lots of cats to play with, and of course, someone to pet you constantly...because most of all, that's what made your day.

Dagney I am really sorry to hear that.

I am also proud of you and your mother that you have the courage ane the compassion to set your puppy free rather than keep her here when she is hurting so badly.

I always offer this to my canine friends on their passing,

" May you see with eyes of light in the ever-dark. May your hunt be swift and wild. May you run with the pack eternal, nose always to the wind."

My deep sympathies.

Mike

My condolences, Dagney.
Really got me thinking about my dog, she's getting up there in the years too. Today when she came to greet me at the door when I came home from work she slipped on the wet kitchen floor, all four feet sprawled out and couldn't get up by herself. She's about the same age as Heidi and I'm not looking forward to what you're going through right now.
My heart goes out to you.

Dag, I'm so very sorry to hear about this. Your remembrances of her are a fine memorial. She lives on in your love. Gentle blessings to her, and to all who loved her, human and fur-bearers.
