Zippy gets it.

It's a nail puller. I'm still trying to get it all cleaned up so it works well. I wonder if it worked well when it was new? I've never seen one like this before or even seen a reference to one.

The sliding handle is a hammer that drives the beak down into the wood around the nail head. Then as you pull back on the lever, there's some complex mechanical action going on that multiplies the grabbing power of the beak holding on to the nail head as you pull it out.

Only problem is 120 years of rust have made it a little sticky in operation. The ramming handle gets hung up on the shaft sometimes. I'm making progress though. Nothing moved at all when I started cleaning it up, but now everything that is supposed to move does move. PB Blaster is a good thing. I saw it at a roadside stand yesterday and it called to me.

And this is the patent.

The inventor sold it to Samuel Nafew, who had a company in NYC manufacturing cast iron stuff. I never even heard of this company, so they must not have been very long lived.

Cool find, where did you get it? It's a miracle it moves at all. My uncle used to soak rusty binding stuff in automatic transmission fluid, but these days any good penetrating oil should loosen it up. It will take time and patience, though. The patent drawings show how it works, which I couldn't fathom from looking at the picture.

It was $15 at a roadside stand out in the sticks of rural Virginia.

It was really rusty and covered in something brown and sticky, like dried molasses. I tried carb cleaner on it first, but that didn't touch the brown sticky stuff. So I thought maybe it was water soluble. So I hit it with the hose for a while. Nothing. Simple Orange degreaser/cleaner. Nothing. So I got out the oven cleaner. That worked really well when combined with a scrub brush, and then I switch to PB Blaster penetrating oil, and then regular engine oil.

I might need to get out sand paper or a file, but want to be cautious before removing lots of metal.

It was fun spending half an hour getting it to loosen up.

Not taking off metal is a good plan. When iron turns to rust the volume increases significantly which binds moving parts. If you can get the rust off with chemicals like Navel Jelly you'll do minimum additional damage.

I'm going to try some more oven cleaner, and then see if I can set up an electrolysis bath with stuff I have on hand.

It would be cool if I got it working and then set up a GIF of it in use.
