Not all of Ft. Worth all that bad
I lived in the Dallas area (Irving) for about 6 years (only moving to the Charlotte, NC area 7 months ago).
My impression was that downtown Ft. Worth was cleaner, better-lit at night, and felt a lot safer (cops on bicycles all over) than downtown Dallas. If you only get into the big city every once in a while, Ft. Worth seemed to be a nicer atmosphere than Dallas, in my limited experience. |

I lived in Austin for 8 years and would travel to Dallas/Fort Worth on business. The Dallas Museum of Art has a fine encyclopedic collection and in Fort Worth, there is the Kimball Art Museum, which is great. Fort Worth has more soul than Dallas. Dallas is big, sprawling, car-scale, chain-store, oil-boom city but Fort Worth has some history. The traffic through Dallas at rush hour in August is perhaps the most heinous I have ever endured.
If you're heading to TX, I would recomend a trip to Austin, Houston, or San Antonio - over DFW. These three all have history, distinctive neighborhoods to explore, good unique food, arts, sports and/or sites. |

Yes! SA is a great town. If you only have a day or two, then I would definitely head to San Antonio. If you have extra time, Austin, then Houston.
San Antonio is quite a city. The river walk alone is worth the trip. As I remember, they just finished cleaning it a while back. (I know it's a chain, but not everyone has a Dick's Last Resort. Go there if you have a chance.) |

The river walk is great, there are music clubs, cafes all along, under the city like another world. Touring the missions is very cool, too. And on the westside of town, perhaps the best Texas offering, found at any local joint: Great Breakfast Tacos. Potato, egg and cheese (maybe chorizo), and pico on fresh corn tortilla.

What's San Antonio (or Texas for that matter), without the Alamo?
Relating to the link, Kelso is a funny writer for the Statesman. Today's column (about the First Lady) is pretty humorous. |

Ha! I can see the BBQ parties as they torch it and wrap up shooting. Dang!
I confess I got sidetracked deep into the gorgeous images of Town Lake bats from the gallery. Purty. |
