9/13/2003: Record-setting salad

Record-setting food again - this time outside Moscow, and they are building the world's biggest salad. This one was supposed to make 2600 kg (7000 lb).

I'm against this one. You can't just muss up a bunch of vegetables and call it a salad. It looks like they didn't even slice the tomatoes. Weak! If they don't put at least oil and vinegar on this, it shouldn't qualify.

Actually, I'd expect Russian Dressing.

The lettuce they're dumping in looks like iceberg lettuce or cole slaw. Yech!

I always wonder about record breaking food events. They always seem to take place outside (so everyone can witness the event) where the food is exposed to who knows what (flys, debris, coughing spectators, etc.). Then they show everyone eating the result, GROSS! Seems rather unsanitary to me. Especially stuff like the longest sub sandwich, IMO mayo and hours in the sun don't make for any enjoyable eating experience or enjoyable restroom experience afterward .

Welcome to the Cellar Feff. No need to waste it, the pigs would turn it into bacon. Mmmm...bacon.

Never trust a Russian

Russians are wily, conniving deceivers.

Yucko, I wouldn't touch that salad unless I knew it had all be pre-washed first. You would be amazed what you find in an unwashed lettuce. Little green bugs and caterpillars everywhere.

Actually, looking at the tomatoes close to the guys hand for perspective, I think those are cherry tomatoes. They aren't supposed to be sliced.
Also, if you look close spectators are wearing coats. That covers most of the insects and, hey if a leaf gets in who's going to notice?
My question is: If it's that cold who's going to want to eat? Screw eating outside in the cold, especially what looks to be a pretty bland salad. Though I suppose any green bugs and caterpillers that came in on the lettuce would add some flavor. Probably protein too.

Does anyone know what the purpose of this was? Did it benefit some charity or was it done for some kind of salad festival? I also like the set of oars to toss it with!

Seems like a terrible waste. My wife and I usually have a salad with dinner and I usually put the leftovers in the fridge but by next day's lunch they sure aren't very appitizing. That's when you need the Blue Chees dressing, hides the defects.

At least when someone trys to make the largest bowl of Jello people can jump into it at the end.

They claim cherry tomatoes aren't supposed to be sliced, but clearly that's a joke meant to make salads even harder to eat than they already are.
