So the people who make yarn holders at pottery have the "hole" accessible via a slot to the rim so it looks like an upside-down comma) so you can remove the ball from the holder while it's still attached to the garment. This one looks like just a hole so you'd have to cut the yarn, but it won't slip out while you're knitting. Which do you think it should be, limey?

Both are acceptable. You use the sort with the slot I'd you think you're likely to work on your knitting project in places other than at home. Mr Snotter would be for projects which remain at home until completion.

Should they stay flat on the surface or be able to roll about? Or is that a matter of personal taste? I thought they should be able to roll, but most I see on the interwebs have features which would make that undesirable if one wanted to keep them in tact

The yarn bowl should stay still on a flat bottom [snicker]. It is the yarn that should roll freely within the confines of the yarn bowl but be prevented from rollicking all around the floor, under furniture etc. by the yarn bowl.

I nearly bought this bogeyman egg separator for Limey for Christmas (Amazon link). I ran out of money so she had to make do with a calendar!
Great minds think alike; although she'd get far more use from the yarn holder of course.

I've commissioned Spencer to create one of these for you, Limes. Just given him the idea, and we'll see what he comes up with. He really liked the Viking hat and is excited about making one as thanks for the time you spent on it. I can't wait to see how it comes out.

Not as cool as the Viking helmet, but I would do a double take on an adult. Somebody is selling these on etsy for $54.
