SciFi calling themsleves "Syfy"
FAIL. If you're afraid to be named after "science fiction" then just ƒuck off and go out of business.

It's supposed to appeal to women. Because women are too dumb to spell, apparently. Oh, and the type of woman who does watch SciFi really likes being pandered to, let me tell you.

Maybe they're trying to cash in on the popularity of 'Firefly'.

It makes me want to hurl, but I'm not their target demographic.
I can see they want to position themselves as "not just science fiction." But I just can't see that "SyFy" does..... anything. (Apparently it's how you would txt it.) Doesn't the enormous popularity of Battlestar Galactica prove that good shows will bring viewers, irregardless* of the name of the network? *used deliberately to provoke those who don't like its use |

Somebody please post a link to the petition that must be out there to send the message that this is the stupidest ƒucking thing that anyone has ever heard of. If they wanted to alienate fans of science fiction with this positively insulting, dumbing-down, being ashamed of what you stand for... whatever you want to call it... seriously just close up shop and open an FM country music station. If the core audience you think you want could possibly not be extremely disturbed and, frankly baffled over this, then really, you're in the wrong business. Go launch another ESPN, or another MTV. Idiots.

Don't you worry your pretty little head about the spelling, dear, just look pretty and tell us which star trek captain you have the biggest crush on. ... but, don't real science fiction fans call it "SF"? And look down with awful snobbery on those media pretenders who say scifi?

Someone commented on a list I'm on that you can't copyright Sci-Fi, but you can copyright SyFy.
Me, I think they're just listening to some hosehead moronic consultants somewhere who took their check and laughed their asses off all the way to the Swiss bank.

And it may be less about feeling ashamed, so much as 'bringing up to date' and making 'cool' by leaving behind what us fogeys call it. I think the fact I just used the word 'cool' probably cements my fogey status.

According to the latest coupon flyer that came to my house advertising all the college-kid-dormitory deals, the new word is "dank." Unless Target has completely changed their business model, and are now offering a completely different sort of "dank deal."

That seems to be the case -- but it migrated from being a reference to high-quality weed.

I haven't watched the SciFi Channel since they stopped showing old, classic SciFi tv shows. I think I may have tried to watch a movie or two that I saw an ad for, but they turned out to be so awful that I fast forwarded onto the next thing on my tape without sticking it out.
