Image backlog again

I'm getting better at finding things as my resources for images improve. That means more images in the queue are Not Good Enough for the daily image...

Okay, who watched Stripes again and got ambitious? This got some press when it was annouced; it's the Army's "SmarTruck", featuring bullet-proof glass, a grenade launcher, a "laser gun" (whatever that is), oil slicks and smokescreens.

Lemur babies.

Why would someone mount a dish to a motorized platform and point it at the ground? To estimate the amount of water in the soil by measuring microwave radiation. Turns out a very small amount of microwave radiation is given off by all things, and now they think they can measure it from space and use that info for stuff. Okay.

They sometimes say America has too much damn money. Well, the Japanese are encroaching on this honor. But it's so crowded there that somehow it makes sense to develop a watermelon that fits in their fridges - and costs something like $70 IIRC. Weird.

Here's what the Ford F-150 looks like after it's been intentionally crashed.

And here's the placenta of a foal.

I recall reading a thing about the watermelons a while back. They are grown in large glass containers with removable tops. Apparently, they perfectly fit on the shelf of the 'average japanese refrigerator', and are becoming quite a popular gift item.. (something akin to our canned ham, one could suppose)

i knew the simpsons were on to something with those watermelons =)

ugh, another placenta! last night i watched a national geographic special on zebras... and i suppose its just the way of nature and all but it was damn gross when a pregnant zebra mother aborted her twins so she could outrun some hyenas on the savannah at night... and then you see the hyenas munching away on the stillborn zebra fetuses... one rips away the slick placenta and looks back at the camera, eyes glowing.

zebras are cool animals though the show had a lot more information i didn't need to know... i know its bad but i couldn't stop chuckling when the proper british narrator said "zebras are known to have particularly large penises..."
