2/2/2006: Record snowman

This is today's Earth Science Pic of the Day, although it really references something that happened in 1999. I had not seen this before so... you know the drill.

The ESPoD says This king sized snowman was made during the winter of 1999 in Bethel, Maine. It's 113 feet tall (34.5 m), weights approximately 9 million pounds and has entire fir trees for arms!

It also points out that they had to build it in a layer cake fashion, inside a metal frame, but it's solid, not hollow. And they say it didn't completely melt away until June 10.

I want one!

They are very bored in Bethel, Maine.

But, it is pretty cool.

That's near my hometown. It's true that it does get a little boring there in the winter, unless you have enough cash to go skiing.

There's a movie of building this thing at the Guiness web page. Movie

That's what happened when Godzilla and Frosty settled down and had children.

Neat, Glatt! On melting, they broke a second record by inadvertantly creating the world's largest snow penis.

That is very unsettling in a Mr. Stay-Puft kind of way.

Way more better than a stupid shoe tree.

Wow, I can't believe you feel this way, LabRat. Was I the only soul (get it? SOUL/SOLE? GET IT?) to think the shoe tree had an austere beauty?

The snowman is nice, in a post-modern sort of way. Scary, too.

Ok. Who can tell Brianna is a college girl? "post-modern". Seriously.

don't get all upset, dar. I'm not wearing a beret, yet. I was merely thinking along the lines of what Kevin Federline might say.

Now that we're "post-modern", what are they going to call the next stage in artistic development? Double-post-modern? Ante-post-modern? Whoever came up with the expression "modern art" should be shot. All art was "modern art" during it's time. They just had more imaginative people to title the era.
