9/19/2002: More tasteless fashion

Hot on the heels (ha ha ha! I crack myself up) of yesterday's tasteless fashion show comes this celebration of violence and propaganda, the "Dress of Revolution". It was designed by Saudi haute couture designer Yehya al-Bashri. The dress was part of a collection featured at an Arab fashion festival in Beirut, to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian uprising against Israel.

The image on her chest is this:

Which shows 12-year-old Mohammed al-Dura, cowering behind his father. He was killed by Palestinian bullets in an exchange of gunfire. His death is blamed on Israel and apparently has become a rallying point in the intifada as the Pals say he was intentionally targeted by IDF forces.

Fashion model Lauren Bush, the face of Tommy Hilfiger and the US president's niece (daughter of brother Neil), refused to wear clothing that is "too Arabic" at Fashion Week in Barcelona.

The fashion house selected Ms Bush as a model because she is an "international personality who had never modelled in Spain," Mr Galinanes said.

"This is fashion, not politics. You can't politicize fashion," he said.

Well, I see from today's IotD that you can politicize fashion. In the process, I think the fashion suffers.

Bad.

First of all, I think it is simply ugly as a dress.

Now that is out of the way, I was wondering about the father+son.

I thought they were killed by israeli soldiers.
I don't know anything about the circumstances leading up to that moment. Could someone fill me in with a somewhat unbiased account?

What kind of situation would lead up to homicide while someone is just filming it?

It is just about the worst thing I have ever seen.
