Slowness earlier today (and in general)

A lot of the slowness recently is now tracked down the several bots trying to get through the registration process. They try and fail because bots do not know what the name of the highest mountain is. But they try and fail a few times per second, which makes the system run through a few hoops per second, slowing it down.

I have IP-banned the bots that I've seen this morning and this has helped, but still they attack us.

thanks, I do sometimes see the cellar stall out, rather, my browser stall as I try to refresh the new posts link. this is most likely the cause.

Either the Chinese think we're really important or they don't know what they're stepping in...

You mean that they can't climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every byway, 'til they find their dream?

Not bad but when I don't feel like logging in and want to do a search, I forget and keep trying to put in Himalayas.
