Having time on my hands, and being somewhat able to keep time, I have decided to teach myself to play bodhran.

I would rather have an actual teacher, but they tend to cost money, and I haven't been able to find any in my area. I don't want to drive to Allentown.

Why Bodhran? Because there's one that's been sitting at the top of my closet for the last 10 or so years since I bought it at the Renaissance Faire. It was $20. I have gotten more than $20 worth of entertainment out of it this week.

I am reliably getting it to make the proper sorts of noises, although at a much slower rate than I think they're supposed to be happening.

I'm working through the videos on http://www.bodhranexpert.com which are really, really good.

I also need to find some Irish music jam sessions, without going into Philadelphia. Not that I'm good enough for that yet, although I am quite enthusiastic. I'm thinking that interacting with actual bodhran players might be useful. That and the Guinness.

Which reminds me, RichLevy, did you ever get around to figuring out the bodrhan at all? And how's your djembe doing?

So, when I'm not watching the Casey Anthony Trial, crocheting, or thumping on the bodhran, what am I doing?

Sometimes, not a lot.

There is one other thing I have been doing, though.

Walking.

There is a lovely park next to my apt, that has a walking path that connects to another, much bigger walking path.

So, I put on my mp3 player, and start trudging. Usually I trudge along listening to The Making of the Atomic Bomb. That's the book with the 90-minute long segments that I need to have the mp3 player remember it's place for me to find truly enjoyable.

I have usually been doing about a mile, mile and a half. I surprised myself last week by discovering that I'd walked 2.14 miles (according to Jeeves, my exercise encourager).

So, I was chattering with one of my girlfriends who lives nearby about this. Invited her along.

That was the stupid part.

Why was that stupid?

Because, rather than my usual wander around the park, we went further.

And missed a turn somewhere maybe.

We were following this trail and it just kept going and going ...

At one point we were going up this hill and I say, "If I see the big road, I will be quite vexed."

Let me tell you, I was more than merely vexed. I was all the way to perturbed, because what I saw at the crest of the hill was a construction site that was not appreciably near where my friend parked her car.

At the end, Jeeves informed me that I had walked 3.7 stinkin' miles.

If I hadn't accepted the ride back to my door, it would have been FOUR.

First of all - thanks for keeping me updated on what you are doing with your free time I walk a lot, too - or, I used to, before Ohio became just another Pennsylvanian swamp (eight weeks of continuous rainfall followed by scorching heat = SwampOhio)

Secondly - I love that you used the word 'vexed'.

Lastly - I've been following the Casey Anthony trial, too, and I have a theory. Maybe it's stupid, maybe I'm projecting but what I think happened is that Casey hates her mother so much and resents her and just really, really despises her and was jealous that Cindy was horning in on being Queen Mother and she thought, well, I'll fix her; I'll take away what she cares about most! Because, honey, Cindy Anthony is a walking pathology of narcissistic nutty-goodness, coupled with the control issues of a Stalin, and merged with the self-righteousness of a True Borderline. Cindy begat Casey but didn't LOVE Casey - only competed with her and was determined to keep Casey under her thumb, by god, but Casey outsmarted her. She did something Cindy never dreamt she'd do - kill Caylee.

Whaddya think?

The skin on the tunable bodhran broke. I picked up a simpler one but I haven't used it lately.

My 2-year-old grandson is really enjoying a mini-djembe I picked up a while ago. I play along with the ashiko, but I'm having a problem with one of the rings which is warped.

Still, if you come over for a BBQ, we can bang on the drums and annoy the neighbors.

That would be a delight.

I thought that you had replaced the head on the tunable after it's over-baking.

I replaced the head on the tunable, but the skin I bought did not have a frame. The 'frame' I jury-rigged failed, and while I was waiting to fix it I misplaced the screws.

Continuing to walk with jeepgirl, but maintaining some additional control over the process. This past Tuesday the weather was looking iffy, so I smuggled her into the exercise room here at the apt.

There are two treadmills side-by-side, so we were each able to walk at our own pace, and had a very nice, air-conditioned time.

I actually went back later that afternoon and played with some of the other stuff ... treadmill, exercise bike, eliptical, more treadmill. I prefer the treadmill. Damn eliptical. I hurt in places I didn't know could hurt because of the way the thing sneakily impacts multiple muscle groups.

One major disappointment ... there is a large changing room/bathroom. I got all excited. Sign on the door said "Ladies Changing Room and Sauna."

Liability attorneys must have descended upon them like locusts. The sauna controls were dismantled and it's being used as a storage closet.

I would so have loved exercising, having a schvitz, and then hitting the pool.

Oh well.

Today the weather was looking iffy again ... actually was iffy. stupidly humid, heavy cloud cover, thunderstorms expected (never materialized), but it did rain here and there, so we went mall-walking. They don't have the distance signs up any longer, but we were able to find a security guard who let us know that three turns around a level was a mile. We did a total of three miles, plus we went up and down the stairs, which made up for my friend having stopped to shop in one of the anchor stores after the mall opened.

According to Jeeves (noom fitness tracker) I've expended over 2500 calories in the last seven days.
