Good luck!
Yes, Kyoto and Tokyo, but as it's a business trip for Mr. S and he'll be busy for 4 days, I'm on my own and will just make plans when I get there. Grab my passport and purse and run without a plan. Did you have some suggestions?
We have tickets for kabuki and a world championship sumo wrestling match for 2 evenings and sushi on another with some locals. I'm beginning to think "tattoo" because of a show I saw recently, too. Open to ideas - except for squirming food.

Sweetwater,
you've got the main things. Make sure you visit some onsens (hot springs). Heaven. They are usually quite cheap, and often have gorgeous outdoor baths where you can relax in a hot soaking tub and enjoy the view. And visiting a few is a way to get yourself off to some out-of-the-way villages etc as they are often natural springs up in the mountains. Just remember to wash and rinse before you get in the tub.

I'll have whatever's left of Jinx's share when the sushi haters leave.
Damn - this makes me want to head to our local Yo Sushi-alike. NO! I can't afford to eat out now and you are not going to tempt me (whimper).

Anyway I have some Chinese buns in the freezer. Okay, not sushi or sashami, but I will eat them tonight and pat my purse which will not be one penny lighter and say nom nom nom.

My wife and I found a favorite little sushi joint right around the corner, ate there for about 6 months, loved it. Cheap, good, fresh, not too great on the service but I can live with that.

Then, one day, we went in and overnight it was like the place had been hit with the crappy stick. The food was AAAAAAWWWWWUL. We stopped going there. A week later, the health code inspector gave the place a "C".

In LA County, you get ranked from A-F, and you have to display the rating so that it's visible to customers at the front entrance of the restaurant. You can also go online to the county health website, and see why the joint got its rating. This sushi place was docked for not keeping their glass fish display cold, for not properly cleaning their food prep area, and for serving "perished" food ... yikes!

I was amazed to see that people still went there at all.

Most food eaten is dead - isn't it?

Near my sister is a small restaurant that sells sushi half-price near the end of the day. I dunno... probably good but I would only semi-enjoy it while eating it, then spend the next couple of hours just... waiting... to see if anything.... happened.

Think of it as a reverse sushi lottery! Will I get sick and die? Possibly!

Do. Not. Buy.

You probably won't get sick - I doubt they'd take that much of a risk, but it will taste like crap. (metaphorical crap, that is, really it will taste like stale sushi. This sucks.)

Unless it's not kept refrigerated (highly unlikely), I don't see what the big deal is. All the other sushi places in the area are just wrapping their stuff up and serving it tomorrow...

Sundae, at some point, when I have my house in order and you can have your residency issues sorted out, you must come up to Yorkshire for a visit. When you do, there's a great little sushi house in Leeds. Si Sushi: they do the best ramen noodles I've ever tasted and their Tofu pouches are to die for. In fact I like pretty much everything they do. I'm not going to attempt to recall the names of the various sushi dishes I like.
