In 1989 the Barbie Liberation Organization was formed. Taking advantage of similarities in the voice hardware of Teen Talk Barbie and the Talking Duke G.I. Joe doll, er, “action figure,” they absconded with several hundred of each and performed a stereotype-change operation on the lot.

The surgery was no simple matter — circuit boards had to be trimmed, a capacitor moved, and a switch re-engineered. The press made it sound like an easy pop-and-switch operation, but this took some research and dedication. (A step-by-step explanation of the BLO method can be found in PDF format at this page)

The BLO returned the altered dolls to the toy store shelves, who then resold them to children who had to invent scenarios for Barbies who yelled “Vengeance is mine!” and G.I. Joes who daydreamed “Let’s plan our dream wedding!” Cleverly placed “call your local TV news” stickers on the back ensured that the media would have genuine recipients to interview as soon as the news broke.

One BLO member counted up the many benefits of their program: “The storekeepers make money twice, we stimulate the economy — the consumer gets a better product — and our message gets heard.”

This is so awesome I can hardly stand it!

Could you elaborate on those reasons? I can personally only think of one: the item is tacky and completely ineffective as far as teaching tools go... which has never stopped the millions of other products being sold by Wal-Mart to the American public.

Well considering what my sister and I had my brother's poor Action Man (US equiv GI Joe I think) doing, I don't think an image of Our Saviour wants to be kissing big breasted blondes behind the tank berm.

Also, something about graven images perhaps...?

Where can I find Barbie doll clothes patterns that you don't need to sew or knit? Looking for some way to make Barbie clothes without sewing or knitting any way to do this any links etc. helpful.

You might be able to put together some zippers into a dress.

Cut 5"x5" square of fabric.

Fold in half, and then in half again to make a smaller square.

With a pair of scissors nip out the corner where all the folds come together.

Barbie Poncho.

Do the same with a larger square of fabric, belt with a bit of string, trendy Barbie dress.

It's really better if you do learn to sew. Barbie has such massive boobs that her dresses and blouses really need darts. Barbie clothes are small enough that you can do a lot of the sewing by hand rather than by machine.

You can also experiment with cutting strategically placed holes in 'trouser' socks, for a slinky shell-type dress. Smaller (girl's) socks work better for this.
