December 1, 2006: Mule deer buck sports hair net

Via Spluch comes this fashion accessory, seen in Durango, Colorado. A wildlife official decided it was safer to let the buck keep his look. But he'll have to drop it before rutting season... no way any self-respecting doe is gonna let that boy anywhere near. He's a little off, he is.

These bucks today...when I was young, no self-respecting young deer would allow themselves to wear something like that. Bet he secretly wishes he was a doe. Hmpf.

He was probably in the middle of helping some grandma ball up skeins of yarn when he got spooked and ran off.

I hope that between now and the time that he drops those antlers he doesn't get that net caught in anything like tree branches. I can imagine him getting really trapped. That could be the end for him if it happens. Then he'd be just one more stastistic of a wild creature brought down by human garbage.

I have an uncle up in Minnesota who was fishing on the Snake river a few years ago when a big buck jumped into the river and began to cross it. Some how he got the fishing line tangled in his antlers and took off with the lure hanging from his rack after the line broke. My uncle got written up in the local paper with his story and he asked that if anyone shot a buck with a Rapalla lure attached to the antlers to please return it to him.

So what the hell was that tangled mess on his antlers? A hammock? There's a clasp or a carabiner hanging off the mess on the right side. Theories?

Edit: I suppose it helps to read the article's headline. Never mind.

It's obvious that the buck migrated from Jamaica. He's Rasta.

I can imagine what the chick deer are thinking: "you know, I would mate with that guy over there, but what's with the antlers? I don't want to put a kid through that!"

You never know - all the finest does might just think that's the hottest thing ever, and next rutting season the bucks will strip the suburbs of all volleyball netting.
