6/14/2002: Biggest goldfish ever
Happy Friday, and say hello to "Bruce". Bruce will be listed in the next Guinness Book as the world's biggest goldfish. He's 16 inches long, about as big as a domestic cat. He was raised in Hong Kong and will have "ambassadorial duties" for China. That all makes sense. The Chinese culture enjoys gold and fish and goldfish. If you like Chinese food as much as I do, you'll notice that many such restaurants have a fish tank with large fish. Sometimes the tank will sit at the entrance to the restaurant. There's a reason for that. It's kinda like a Feng Shui thing: the tank interrupts the flow of the place, helping keep prosperity in the restaurant. You also see the lucky cat statue (making the black power fist), and gold words framed on a red background. Every culture has similar things going on, but they are so embedded that they are invisible. Think of things like the red and white barber pole. Or maybe the horseshoe over the door. The lack of any 13th floor in any US building. Does any of this make sense? No, but they are deeply ingrained in the culture. Weird traditions and superstitions are virtually everywhere. I always thought goldfish were just baby carp... was I wrong? |
