That reminded me of a funny day at work about 20 years ago. I was working in NYC in an office with a few other people doing customer service, one of whom was a tough talking black chick who spoke almost entirely in slang and/or what is now called ebonics.

She says "I call my sister up and she go 'Hello Sharon. How are you? I'm fine, the children are doing well. Jim's outside mowing the lawn'. " Only she says it without her thick NYC patois, very white midwestern sounding. Like a frigging news anchor.

It was pretty funny to hear her impression of "speaking white" and if you'd been on the phone with her...

I really feel sorry for people who work hard and learn to assimilate only to become alienated from the people they come from. I mean, you basically can't speak in an "undesirable" dialect and expect to be very successful, outside of the entertainment industry.
