Best Rock Lyrics

I'm sure there are plenty of gems that don't occur to me, at the moment...

"Ten Years Gone"

Then as it was, then again it will be
An' though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
Blind stars of fortune, each have several rays
On the wings of maybe, down in birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow
But as the eagle leaves the nest, it's got so far to go

Changes fill my time, baby, that's alright with me
In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be

The texture of Plant's voice on the passage "Did you ever really need somebody?" just blows my mind. Somehow, gritty without being guttural.

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

RUSH
Show Don't Tell

How many times do you hear it?
It goes on all day long
Everyone knows everything
And no one's ever wrong
Until later...

Who can you believe?
It's hard to play it safe
But apart from a few good friends
We don't take anything on faith
Until later...

Show...don't tell...

(Show me, don't tell me)
You've figured out the score
(Show me, don't tell me)
I've heard it all before
(Show me, don't tell me)
I don't care what you say
(Show me, don't tell me)

You can twist perceptions
Reality won't budge
You can raise objections
I will be the judge
And the jury

I'll give it due reflection
Watching from the fence
Give the jury direction
Based on the evidence
I, the jury

Blues Traveler - Hook Lyrics

It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing withinflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Someinner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothingso far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing myjob then it's your resolve that breaks

Becausethe hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you nolie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confessiondraws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
Tofamiliar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peterloved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow

Wasthat the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' youno lie
The hook brings you back
On that you canrely

Suck it in suck it in suck it in
Ifyou're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperatemove or else you'll win
And then begin
To see
What you're doing to me this MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me
So desperately Ising to thee
Of love
Sure but also rage and hate andpain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feelingon the shelf
I've tried well no in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got too much prideinside
To hide or slide
I'll do as I'lldecide and let it ride till until I've died
And onlythen shall I abide by this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute diddys
I wanna bust all yourballons
I wanna burn of all your cities to the ground
But I've found
I will not mess around
Unless Iplay then hey
I will go on all day
Hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
That's really all thiswas
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
Idon't rely on luck because

Because the hookbrings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

Added irony: the chord progression from that song is nothing but Pachelbel's Canon in D.

The Tubes: What Do You Want From Life
Still gives me chills 25 years later. I loved a person this must have been written for.

What do you want from life
To kidnap an heiress
or threaten her with a knife
What do you want from life
To get cable TV
and watch it every night

There you sit
a lump in your chair
Where do you sleep
and what do you wear
when you're sleeping

What do you want from life
An Indian guru
to show you the inner light
What do you want from life
a meaningless love affair
with a girl that you met tonight

How can you tell when you're doin' alright
Does your bank account swell
While you're dreaming at night
How do know when you're really in love
Do violins play when you're touching the one
That you're loving

What do you want from life
Someone to love
and somebody that you can trust
What do you want from life
To try and be happy
while you do the nasty things you must

Well, you can't have that, but if you're an American citizen you are entitled to:
a heated kidney shaped pool,
a microwave oven--don't watch the food cook,
a Dyna-Gym--I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,
a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,
a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi,
real simulated Indian jewelry,
a Gucci shoetree,
a year's supply of antibiotics,
a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth
and Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number,
a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,
Rosemary's baby,
a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,
a new Matador, a new mastodon,
a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,
a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,
a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,
a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mac truck,
a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,
a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away,
or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
a Las Vegas wedding,
a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby's arm holding an apple?

Edited to add: It just occurred to me that this might seem directed at someone but it's not. It's just a song I remember from HS with some funny lyrics.

Blondie--Rip Her to Shreds

(heypsst psst, here she comes now.)
Oh, you know her.
Would ya look at that hair!
Yeah, you know her,
Check out those shoes.
She looks like she stepped out of the middle of somebodys blues.
She looks like the sunday comics!
She thinks shes brenda starr.
Her nose job is real atomic...
All she needs is an old knife scar!
Ehhh, shes so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
Shes so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
Oh, you know her, miss groupie supreme!
Yeah, you know her, vera vogue on parade.
Red eye shadow!
Green mascara!
Yuck.
Shes too much.
She looks like she dont know better.
A case of partial extreme.
Dressed in a robert hall sweater.
Acting like a soap opera queen...
Ehhh, shes so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
Shes so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
She got the nerve to tell me shes not on it
But her expression is too serene...
Yeah, she looks like she washes with comet!
Always looking to create a scene...
Ehhh, shes so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
Shes so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
Shes so dull.
Rip her to shreds!
Oh, you know her, miss groupie supreme.
Yeah, you know her, vera vogue on parade.
Yeah, you know her, with the fish eating grin...
Shes so dull.
Yeah, she got the nerve to tell me!
Huh, shes so... dull...
Yeah, there she goes now.
She making out with king kong!
She take her boat to hong kong.
Well, bye bye sugar!
And not a minute too soon.

Meoowwwwwwwwww! :p
