I dunno - I usually get a response to antibiotics within 12 hours. Which I assumed was usual AND the reason that they admonished you to finish the course.

The exception was my horrible cough last year, which went on for three weeks and I eventually went to the doctors because my pharmacist recommended it and gave me a leaflet on lung cancer (I didn't meet the At Risk groups, so I never thought it was that!) It didn't clear up until the 5th day, so I assumed it was indeed viral and had just run its course.

I'm willing to accept that my experiences might have been unusual though.

Yes, it varies from person to person and disease to disease. So if you already have the pills and they are doing no harm, don't give up. Otherwise, you are just adding to the problem.
