Possessed CDR Drive
Here's a fun one to gnaw on.
Before I do a complete system restore (which needs done anyway), I'd like to figure out what the heck is going on with a CDR drive in a system I'm working on. When the system boots, the CDR starts opening and closing on its own. Nothing is in the drive, and as far as I can tell, there is nothing trying to send information to the drive to be written. We've run a virus scan, spy ware scans, and various system scans, and nothing stops the constant 'click whir' of the drive. Any ideas? The system is currently on a not so legal version of WinXP pro - I'm in the process of trying to back the system up to convert to a legally purchased copy of WinXP Home (I didn't buy it, nor did I recommend it). That's a topic of a whole other thread. Thanks. Dagney

Has it vomited pea soup?
More seriously, have you examined the "eject" button? It sounds like it's stuck. It's hard to imagine a software issue or a cabling problem that would cause this behavior. (Which doesn't mean it's impossible.) |

Once had a harmless joke running through the office. Mail arrived, open this link, etc etc. The story was about relaxing in the office, and, here, have a coke. Then this file caused the cd to open, the punch line being "Here's your drink holder". Yuck, yuck, yuck.
Anyway, this program did do the trick. Here's the link to the current version of the program. Could this be the issue? Could you start up in diagnostic mode and examine all startup commands? http://www.funnyhumor.com/downloads/34.php g/l

Its a virus. I'll try to track down the antidote. But, if you are going to "start from scratch" with a new win install, that'll do it also.
