I know I'm late to the post, but 99% of the problems with IE crashing, freezing, or otherwise misbehaving are caused by misconfiguration or addons that are causing problems. In IE7, there's a neat new button that will reset to "factory defaults". Go to Tools, Internet Options, clicked on the advanced tab, and click the button that says 'reset', then click reset on the window that pops up. To accomplish some of what this new feature does in versions lower than IE7, you had to click on the programs tab, click reset web settings, click yes, then ok, click on the general tab, click settings, click view objects, go to edit, select all in the downloaded program files window that opened up, then file, remove program files, then close the window, click ok on the settings window, then ok on the internet options window.

I had a similar occurence after upgrading my version of InternetExploder. Downloaded it. Installed it. IE wouldn't open thereafter. So, fuckit, I downloaded NetScrape for the wife to use and I use Firefox.

What really chapped me is not being able to UNinstall IE. WTF?

IE doesnt uninstall. If you delete it, it comes back like a bad Bond villan.

It's Windows. You can't uninstall "Paint" either.

So does McAfee.

A friend of mine downloaded the updates for the McAfee virus software yesterday, and had the problem that she couldn't connect to the Internet unless the Privacy Service was registered. She could only register the Privacy Service on the McAfee's site on the Internet which she could not connect to because Privacy Service was running. And we couldn't turn off the Privacy Service, because any time that you tried to turn it off, McAfee turned it back on.

Any time that you clicked 'Cancel' on the pop-up, it brought itself back. We found no menu option to turn the McAfee software off, and any time that you used ctrl+alt+del to kill all the processes associated with McAfee, they just restarted. Any time that we stopped the Services associated with McAfee, they were either restarted or we received warnings that we did not have permission to stop the Services.

We finally managed to uninstall McAfee Privacy Service and connect to the Internet again -- but damn, it's a nasty little bugger.

I know what you mean. I have an AIT3 tape library at work that wants me to insert the cleaning tape in a user-defined slot in order to activate the menu for the cleaning tape utilities. The problem is, I'm not the user who defined the slot, and I don't know which one it is. In order to find out, I have to insert the tape into the slot, to activate the menus. To find out which slot it is. But I have to insert the tape to do that. In the slot.

Nothing. Except the barcode scanner tries to scan it, and finds that it doesn't have a barcode. Then, nothing.

If I recall correctly, I tried to uninstall Paint once, for whatever reason, and Windows told me that certain components of the application were integral to the operating system and could not be removed. This was years ago, not even sure which OS it was exactly...

You really should learn from this IE problem. Again, important additional information would be in the sysetm (event) log that may explain what had failed; even provide others with information to avoid such future problems.
